Synagogue of the Israelite Argentine Congregation (Sinagoga de la Congregación Israelita Argentina), also called Templo Libertad, is a Jewish synagogue situated on Libertad street, near the famous Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Argentine. It houses the Jewish history and culture museum in Argentine. Its construction was started by Jewish residents in Buenos Aires in 1897 and completed in 1932. It is the largest Synagogue in South America. It represents the third largest Jewish community of the world. It was declared a National Historical Monument in 2000. In the center of concentric arches is a six-pointed Star of David. Hands placed on top of the entrance gate represent the blessing of the Priests of Jerusalem. The upper part of the Temple displays a representation of the Tablets of the Law with the Ten Commandments as described in the Book of Exodus.

Are you open today? Tomorrow? Friday? The Jewish museum is attached to the beautiful synagogue next door and is a very impressive museum. Probably the best Jewish museum I have visited with clear explanations in English as well as Spanish. I particularly liked their explanation of the importance of the woman in Judeism and in the Jewish home. My inquiry via google maps on opening hours this week was promptly answered!! Highly Recommended

Absolutely incredible sanctuary. The security is strong (a good thing). Bring your original passport and be prepared to answer questions. The young lady at the front desk gently requested a donation (absolutely, no worries) and spoke both English and Spanish with perfection. The artifacts and paintings speak of families long gone but unforgotten. Thank you to the community that preserves such priceless history.

I was just admiring the building from the opposite side of the street. Some kids in suits ran up to me after a minute and started asking questions about where I'm from, how long I'm staying, what's the purpose of my visit etc.. I was perplexed but I answered. Then when I simply took a picture of the top of the building, a "policeman" (who didn't want to ID himself) ran up screaming and told me to delete the picture. Afterwards he demanded to see my passport (again - I was on the opposite side of the street, not entering the building). Then he insisted on searching my backpack and even made me unpack a sandwich I had in there. I complied because I didn't want to have any trouble. Then he just left.

What's this harrasment of tourists who are just admiring the beautiful...

Templo Libertad (1897-1932) Congregación Israelita de la República Argentina. Excelente obra del Arq. Alejandro Enquin.
