I have found a new after-meal treat! I saw Milani - 8 several weeks ago, but got around to trying it last night. I'm very happy that I visited them. The woman behind the counter seemed a little shy and we had to ask if we could try any of the flavors that were churning about in the freezer case. She obliged us and the quality of their product was apparent immediately. I tried the Dark Chocolate. It had a rich chocolate taste that may be too intense for those who favor milk chocolate. I was about to get a scoop, but looked in the adjacent case and decided to try the Creme Brulee. That was an excellent idea, especially if you like creme brulee. I order a single scoop on a cone and enjoyed every bite. The gelato was creamy, rich, smooth, had a very pleasant mouth-feel. It is no wonder that this flavor won an Australian award. We sat nearby and enjoyed our Gelato and watched the line swell. I'm happy that we didn't have to wait. Looking at the faces of other customers, it seemed that they enjoyed themselves too! If you are in the Market Square area and you'd like to treat yourself, swing by Milani -8 and give them a try! To me, it's a better value and higher quality product than Baskin Robbins (and I REALLY like BNR!) They could be a little more engaging by offering samples, but some folks may find that approach too pushy.

Customer service is king - what was simply nice ice cream (using the word gelato is a big reach) was tainted by one very rude employee.. she acted like she could not be bothered being there and was not friendly or welcoming at all! She unfortunately ruined the experience for us making us pay for the ice cream “before” she allowed us to taste test anything.. not sure why we out of everyone were asked to do that.. mind you we only tasted one flavour before deciding to stick with known classic flavours for fear of being denied a second taste! Once she gave me the ice cream (in a cup), I looked at her because she didn’t give me a spoon and actually waited for me to ask for one?! I understand the demographics of Sunnybank and also know not to have high expectations of customer service but surely seeing as though you won an award, you’d want to be more friendly? The mouthfeel of the ice cream was nowhere near what real gelato is and it had an artificial taste to it.

I never did manage to visit Milani House of Gelato in Hamilton, so was glad they've opened a shop much nearer to me in Market Square. Dropped by for an afternoon treat to help keep cool in the heat. Our order: * medium cup or cone (1-2 flavours), $8 - we chose the taro and the mango in a cone * purple rice yoghurt milkshake, $7 - gelato, housemade yoghurt, Thailand purple rice The gelato went down pretty well and we always prefer it in a cone.... unfortunately someone couldn't wait to get tucked in before I managed a photo! Wasn't so much a fan of the milkshake though, probably because the flavour profile was fairly flat and didn't have much in the way of things to add sweetness or other highlights. But I'm sure it was reasonably healthy. Will be back to try some other flavours, including their durian option.

I had planned our day around visiting for some icecream, and extended family joined us. We wanted to support a local icecream store doing so well so visited after the fun of the Lunar New Year celebrations.

We didn’t mind the lines, but the service was not what we expected. We'd waited quite some time only to be rushed through and not served what we’d requested.

When the server asked for our order, they were interrupted by a colleague and mustn’t have listened. I realised quickly it was wrong - we were given a cone instead of a cup. When I pointed it out very politely, they essentially shrugged and said they were the same price. I mentioned again I needed a cup - and they didn’t seem to see why I cared and dismissed it. I asked again and they eventually passed me an empty cup plus the icecream still in its cone. I asked if they could transfer it for me and they put the icecream cone UPSIDE DOWN into the cup and handed it back!! At no point was I demanding or rude. They weren’t being rude either. They just didn’t seem to care. I again mentioned I didn’t want the cone, and ended up being given a wooden little spoon to scrape out the icecream into the cup.

Each of our icecreams cost $6.50 and this was not the experience I would have expected. Friend who wanted the icecream in a cup was gluten free and very disappointed no respect was shown for allergies.

I left feeling awkward and none of our group would return. It seemed...
