Story Bridge walking path and cycle way — Attraction in Brisbane City

The footpaths on both sides of the bridge are closed until further notice as of March 2025. There is no scheduled reopening date as yet (10 April 2025). The footpath on the downstream side is also a major bicycle river crossing and commuter route, so its loss is a huge inconvenience for many cyclists.

The footpaths were closed when Cyclone Alfred approached Brisbane in early March due to fears of high wind conditions. They were never re-opened because of known structural issues that need further careful inspection and possible remedial action. As I understand it, the footpaths are bacically "bolt-on" structures attached to the sides of the main bridge deck and steel superstructure. There is corrosion present in many places in the superstructure, I am told, and engineers have been particularly concerned with the supports for the footpaths.

Don't expect the footpaths/bikeway to open anytime soon! The Brisbane City Council has no commitment to keeping the public informed about a possibe re-opening - information about this major cycling route is impossible to find on...

The Story Bridge is a Brisbane Icon that crosses over the Brisbane River, and it is an important connection between the major inner city touristic areas of the city. It features footpaths on both sides, where you can enjoy a walk, a jog or a bike ride. It connects Fortitude Valley/New Farm/City areas on one side and Kangaroo Point/Southbank on the other side.
