The Story Bridge (1939) is a monument to plagiarism. John Bradfield thought of an original design for the Sydney Harbour Bridge, but for Brisbane, he just copied the plans of Montreal's Jacques Cartier Bridge by Philip Pratley, built 8 years before. In those days, before international media and internet, who would have known? This spectacular bridge carries traffic better than the Freeway, built in the 1970s, and it flows quicker to this day. Beneath the Bridge is a lovely park, with good specimens of Moreton Bay Fig trees, picnic and BBQ areas, and nice loos. The beach area down the steps from this park is an unofficial dog park. Please pick up after your dog, and control it near the big scrub turkey's nest around under the bridge. There are scrub turkeys, curlews, plovers and possums in this park. There is a fenced dog park further along the riverside walk and bike track. Parking is paid down here, but not on the side streets. Cyclists can join the southern riverside bike track to the Kangaroo Point Cliffs and Southbank, but the boardwalk in the direction of Mowbray Park is closed for repairs right now, and probably for a while. Cyclists should ride on the footpaths of the Bridge itself, and ring your bell for pedestrians.
