A quiet urban refuge. The punt ride to the island is free. The punt man is knowledgeable and welcoming. The island is quite small (8 acres) but quiet as most visitors walk the perimeter arts trail. Few use the limited picnic spots. An excellent, though noisier, cafe is on the adjacent bank. In 2020 nearby street parking is 2h every day. It’s a factor if you plan a picnic. BYO everything. Take your rubbish away.

Quick crossing with short wait time for the Parks Vic free summertime ferry. The island had maze like pathways interspersed with several outdoor sculptures. The picnic ground has shelters and BBQ. The toilet is near the building housing a free local art exhibition, which was lovely with a large variety of artworks

A boat ride to an island? This little paradise in the Yarra river is Melbourne’s best kept secret. Super easy to get to from South Yarra and surrounding suburbs. Free water transportation (access via Como landing). There’s a small sculpture festival until April on the island. Highly recommend if you live nearby.

Five stars for this hidden gem. Caught the punt (free, operated by Parks Victoria) from Como Landing and enjoyed the quiet meandering paths where there is plenty of sculptures to admire. It was great to see lots of volunteers maintaining the natural parkland. The gallery is worth a visit.

I love this bustling yet peaceful little island, and what makes me even more fascinated is the small museum on it, which showcases artworks by various artists. While appreciating the art, visitors can also engage in interactive activities.

Description
Herring Island is a small 3.2 hectares artificial island located in Melbourne's Yarra River at South Yarra, approximately 3 kilometres from the city centre. It is the only island in the Yarra River. Herring Island was formed in 1928 by cutting a channel through an old basalt quarry.
