Dom St. Jakob — Attraction in Innsbruck

The Domkirche zu St. Jakob (Cathedral of St. James) is an 18th-century Baroque cathedral in Innsbruck, Austria.

Innsbruck Cathedral has a plain but window-filled facade with two towers topped with domes. A large dome covers the transept crossing. The interior is fully decorated in the Baroque style, with contributions from the Asam Brothers.

In stile barocco, dove l'eccesso era sinonimo di bellezza, questa struttura ecclesiastica sorge nel centro storico tra il tettuccio d'oro e il parco di Lumagica e fu rucostruita in questo stile, a seguito di un terremoto che la distrusse, fra il 1717 e il 1724. Esternamente presenta una sobria facciata a pietra a vista ed è caratterizzata dalla presenza di grandi finestre a tutto sesto inferiormente e ovali al di sopra. In cima abbiamo una statua della Madonna col Bambino ai lati San Giorgio a cavallo. La facciata è stretta fra due poderose torri campanarie gemelle con copertura in rame. Quella a nord custodisce dal 1982 un carillon di 48 campane giudicato il più grande d'Austria. L'interno è a croce latina mentre la navata è unica con la volta composta da cupole piatte che termina con una vera cupola. La cupola, il pulpito e la volta del presbiterio furono distrutte nuovamente ma stavolta da da una bomba aerea nel 1944 durante la Seconda guerra mondiale. Fu tutto ricostruito nei minimi dettagli, grazie alla documentazione storico-fotografica, da Hans Andre, famoso pittore e scultore austriaco. Decorazione a stucchi e pastello vennero realizzati nel 1723 dal grande maestro stuccatore Egid Quirin Asam, mentre gli affreschi sono del fratello, Cosmas Damian Asam. Sull'altare maggiore si trovano la cornice dell'artista Josef Schöpf e il quadro della Madonna Ausiliatrice di Lucas Cranach del1520.
