I visited Kroll for the first time this weekend - hadn’t been able to get a seat during my previous Innsbruck visits. First off, the location is beautiful, right in the old town and around the corner from the golden roof, in a gorgeous alley. I’d read reviews about the eat Strudel in Innsbruck and was super excited to see an empty seat outside, which I hastily walked over to and secured before another tourist could beat me to it. Not sure if my expectations were too high, but this was a super disappointing experience. To be clear, the staff was very friendly, but that’s about all (beside the location) that I can praise here. Even the average bakery chains tend to have a better Strudel, which is simply unacceptable (the place is not cheap and mentions numerous times that you’ll have to pay an additional 15% for consuming your s Strudel in-house). I've tried 3 strudels by ordering their selection plate with the classic Apfelstrudel, 2) rhubarb, and berry strudel with whipped cream, with the latter being the only halfway acceptable. The rest was absolutely dry, extremely acidic (which made them all taste the same) and almost artificial. To be honest, this tasted like something you would pick up at a train station somewhere for 1€, but definitely not like a traditional Austrian Strudel and surely not like Innsbrucks best. Another note: even the basic black coffee (Verlängerter) sucked and was super watery and highly unpleasant. Basically tasteless. Don’t waste your time and money here - I’ve read about some alternatives that I will go for next time.

I can't really say why I chose to eat here besides the fact that it was open earlier than other places. Austrians seem to start their days late. This cafe has a wide variety of strudels. Some have meat and others have fruit. I was kind of curious to try the bacon cabbage strudel, but they didn't have that available. A few of the items on the menu weren't available. It's not like they only serve certain dishes at certain times. They just didn't have it. Disappointing. I ordered the sweet cheese mango strudel. It was between that and the sweet cheese cherry strudel. It came out, pleasant looking. The server offered me vanilla sauce for it, but didn't tell me it was €2 extra. If I knew that, I would have said no because it wasn't that great and I didn't use it all. The strudel tasted good. The mango wasn't too strong. The base of the strudel was hard to cut with the fork. It was a little hard and thick like it had been baked too long. That part of the strudel still tasted good. It was just hard to cut. The size of the strudel was perfect. The coffee tasted good. I would come back, maybe to try a meat strudel. The server, who I think was also the owner, didn't seem to happy to serve me. She seemed to act like she was too good to serve me.

The first stop was grabbing a donut as we were passing by in the morning. The donut was nice with its custardy filling. We stopped by again later that night to grab some strudel. It turns out that they do more than strudel. There was such a huge selection of sweet and savoury items in their cabinet. As it was for dessert I grabbed a few sweet items. The sacher torte was a bit dry but it is supposed to be like that. The torten was essentially a millefeuille and that was tasty. I tried the topfenstrudel, which was a sweet cheese strudel. I found the cheese not sweet enough but the strudel pastry was quite nice. It was a nice cafe to stop by for something tasty. There is seating inside so it would also be a nice place to just rest while enjoying tasty food when you're in the Old Town area.

We went to sit in a table and a cranky waitress yelled at us because we weren’t allowed to sit there. (I wanted to leave then and there, but we literally just wanted a quick cup of coffee and to be off to the airport… so my husband told me to just stay since it would be quick). To be fair, after scolding us, she then explained why we weren’t allowed to sit there. Her tone was still rude, but at least there was that.

She told us to wait, she would sit us somewhere else. In the mean time, a lovely couple offered us their table because they were leaving soon. My mother in law said thank you, and proceeded to sit, while the rest of us were standing waiting for the waitress to come back. The waitress saw my mother in law, got even more irritated and said we couldn’t sit there either (this time without any reason).

She gave us a table finally. We sat. She came to ask for our order (all of this in the RUDEST manner possible by the way, her tone, her disposition, the eye rolling, this lady was just awful), to which I answered that we’d go inside to take a peek at the pastries. She said no, we had to order at the table. At this point we were laughing because the RUDENESS of this lady seemed comical at this point. She clearly hated that we were tourists, yet worked in a coffee shop in the most touristic part of the city. So I asked if I could then see a menu (since I wasn’t allowed inside… although I knew it was going to be in German and I wouldn’t understand, hence why I wanted to go see the pastries in person). She scoffed and threw the menus at us at the table!

We got...

Terrible service, overrated food. There were two staff working in the shop at the time when we visited there but none of them seemed to care about us and they just kept chatting amongst themselves. We had no choice but seated ourselves and started looking at the menu. Still no one has came to us so we finally walked up to the counter and tried to place the order with one of them, the lady staff. I was still being patient and polite and told her that we were ready to order. She didn't say anything and immediately turned her head and asked her colleague, the male staff to help us instead. He was acting all weird and being sarcastic during our conversation. Anyway we finally placed the order and I saw our strudels were ready and waiting at the counter. Though she didn't serve them to us right away but she waited and made the male staff to bring them to our table which it was about 5-10 mins later. Of course, our strudels were already cooled off and very much tasteless. I still have no idea why she couldn't just brought them to us when they were still hot and fresh. Not to mention the place wasn't busy at all when we visited there. We strongly dislike this place as there was no reason whatsoever why we should being treated like...
