👍🏻 Great experience and I think it is the best option compared to other trains in Austria.

👍🏻 The train route up and down is beautiful, allowing you to see the entire Wolfgang Lake.

👍🏻 Upon reaching the summit we were able to see very impressive views of Wolfgang Lake and other nearby lakes.

⚠️ It takes 35 minutes for the train to climb to the top and also descend the same time 35 minutes.

⚠️ In my opinion the train is a great experience for children more than adults.

⚠️ There is an overpriced adult ticket for €56 while the child ticket is €17 We request those in charge of the train management to reduce the price of the adult ticket to not exceed €35 The price is a bit reasonable.

⚠️ It is preferable to book tickets at the counter because there are discount offers because I booked online and found out that I have a discount card from the hotel, but I did not benefit from it because I actually paid.

⚠️ Restaurants and toilets are available on top.

⚠️ Always try to sit on the side overlooking Lake Wolfgang.

⚠️ Scan the ticket code on the parking lot when the final price appears and you will get a special discount, I know this by chance from the counter ticket and they don't tell anyone about it.

⚠️ Don't rush down from the top as many do, try to spend an hour to an hour and a half there to have fun and walk & For hiking lovers, I recommend staying from two to two and a half hours because there is a very beautiful and exciting trail on the edge of the mountain.

⚠️ Electronic Portals For going up and down programmed on the time set so it is not optional and you should pay attention to it.

⚠️ The location of the station is located in the Wolfgang Center and you can enjoy a walking tour that will have great views and many options of cafes and...

We eventually arrived here after nearly 2 hours driving from Salzburg and were able to park the car in the last remaining parking space at the railway station. €82 later we had our tickets and after a brief stop for an ice cream we boarded the train. The train had 2 large carriages but we were lucky enough to get two rows to ourselves. Progress was slow (it is a pretty steep mountain, 1700m at the final station) and it barely created a breeze inside on this baking hot day where we all had to wear damned sweat masks. After about half an hour we got off at the summit station. On the way up we'd seen swathes of trees, seemingly clinging to bare rock and beautiful Austrian chalets on the hillsides as well as the occasional masochistic hiker that insisted on walking up in 35 degree heat. I expected to just take a couple of pictures and then head to the cafe but even my cycnical city head was awestruck by the sheer majesty of the lakes and mountains. All the cliches were there, azure blue lakes, jagged mountain peaks and nutters on paragliders. Every corner we took opened up a new vista so we walked for about an hour just enjoying the scenery. This was despite some hugely vertigo inducing sights and absolutely no safety precautions! We then went into the summit cafe for an ice cream coffee for me and another puritan black coffee for Deb. We sat on the terrace enjoying the shade of the umbrella and the sugar rush from the ice cream before joining the queue for the train down...

On June 2023, my family and I embarked on the final flight bound for the mountain summit. Regrettably, despite our intentions, we found ourselves abandoned at the summit by the train conductor, who exhibited discriminatory behavior towards us. Despite his awareness of our impending arrival, he callously departed, leaving us stranded at the pinnacle without any means of transportation.

The lack of available transportation from the summit posed a significant threat to the safety and well-being of myself and my family as we contemplated the perilous descent. The absence of a paved road necessitated a treacherous journey of over four hours on foot, fraught with potential hazards and obstacles. Compounded by the absence of provisions such as water and food, our situation grew increasingly dire.

In order to descend from the summit, we resorted to traversing the railway track, an unconventional and potentially dangerous route. This decision was borne out of necessity, as no alternative means of reaching the base were readily available to us. The absence of proper infrastructure and amenities exacerbated our plight, intensifying the hardships we endured.

Our experience on that ill-fated day was undoubtedly a harrowing one, marred by the events that unfolded. The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the challenges and risks that can arise when confronted with inadequate transport provisions and...

I understand it's one of the oldest steam-operated cog trains, but I just did not enjoy the experience. The cabins are absolutely overcrowded with people, most of them cannot see outside well and one half of the lucky ones sitting by the window can only see out for roughly half the trip and the same for the group on the other side. This all gets extra unpleasant in summer when it gets hot inside. The train is super slow (for a good reason), which gets boring fast. And it's seriously overpriced - if one 30 minute cog rail train trip costs the same as a return flight from Vienna (to various destinations across Europe), someone is ripping you off. Use your €34 to fly, even Ryanair will be more fun and space. So the reasons to use it basically boil down to two: You want to get up to/down from Schafberg (which is amazing place) and do not want to walk - or - you love cog railway. And if you do, buy the tickets in the cashier and book a specific time or you risk not being able to get onto the train.
