One of two large equestrian states at Heldenplatz (Hero's Square) is that of Erzherzog Karl (Archduke Karl) which faces fellow equestrian monument of Prinz Eugen Reiter and the Hapsburg Palace.

This is a large-scale, bronze monument created by German-Austrian sculptor Anton Dominik Fernkorn (1853-59). Karl is noted for his military victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Aspern in 1809.

Here you see the Archduke on horseback, rearing up as if about to make a charge. Karl is holding a flag in his right hand, leaning forward and looking to his left.
