Michaelerplatz in Vienna was designed around 1725, but it was not until the end of the 19th century that the Baroque star-shaped square in the city center was realized. A number of remarkable buildings are grouped around Michaelerplatz.

In addition to the Michaelertrakt of the Hofburg mentioned above (Michaelerplatz 1, with a dome above the street leading to the castle gate), which was designed as the dominant feature of the Kohlmarkt view, the early 20th century saw the construction of the Looshaus, designed by Adolf Loos, which was highly controversial at the time (Michaelerplatz 3). The so-called Palais Herberstein (Michaelerplatz 2), a new Baroque Zinspalais instead of the old Palais Dietrichstein-Herberstein, attempts to adapt to the style of the Michaelertrakt.

Michaelerkirche can be considered one of the most historically and culturally significant church buildings in Vienna. Historically assigned to it are the Great Michael House (Michaelerplatz 4), built by the Barnabites in 1720 by Giovanni Battista Maderna, and the Small Michael House (Michaelerplatz 6), built in 1732, on the ground floor of which the “Michaeler Bierhaus” was located from 1749 for over two centuries. The church between them bears the number 5. Since 1991, the center of Michaelerplatz has been defined by an open-air archaeological excavation, permanently open to the public as a branch of the Vienna Museum and framed by architect Hans Hollein.

An excellent example of the grand manner of urban design that makes Vienna so beloved. A wonderful public square which has a claim to being the heart of old Vienna. A beautiful Baroque city square connecting the former imperil palace, the Hofburg, with major inner city streets. The Hofburg and Church of St Michael dominate the square-shaped "Platz" in a deliberately designed manner. While here, check out the archaeological remains of Vindobona, the Roman frontier fort (or castrum) that is the ancient predecessor of modern Vienna. To be more precise, the remains are of a suburb outside the fort. They are cleverly preserved to be visible through the hardscape for all visitors to...

My one day Vienna itinerary ⤵️ 1. Start with brunch at @ulricherichwien 2. Visit the Palace of Justice (it’s a highly secure yet GORGEOUS government building- see the reel I posted before this one for all the details!) Pop up to their cafeteria for a coffee and a great view 3. Swing by the Austrian Parliament Building - it’s just nice to look at 👀 4. Take a stroll through Volksgarten 5. See some ornate statues, beautiful architecture, and horses and carriages in Michaelerplatz 6. Visit St. Stephen’s Cathedral. *Tour the inside for free or pay (cash only) to climb to the top of the north or south tower (great views!) 7. Stop into Shakespeare and Co. if you love an aesthetic book place 8. Grab a bite at Israeli restaurant @miznonvienna (the hamburger in a pita is 🤤) 9. End the day with a visit to the Vienna State Opera House (@wienerstaatsoper) I got an opera ticket for €15 and made sure to arrive early. The interior is incredible. 📌 Save for your Vienna trip! (And drop any other suggestions in the comments if you have them- I’ll pin them 🤗) . . . . . #visitvienna #travelitinerary #discovervienna #vienna #visitaustria #austria #onedayinvienna
