I have never had such a bad experience. This was the last time I’ll ever go to this place! It was New Year's, and I had just sat down to rest after the liturgy finished. I took out my thermos to warm up a bit because there are no heaters there! I could have frozen during the liturgy (and afterwards, I got sick). Then, one worker came over and started insulting me, saying I was making the place look ugly by sitting and drinking tea, and that I should leave immediately! Imagine, it was New Year's!!! My heart was completely broken. Another worker was disturbing the liturgy the entire time, opening and closing the door just for fun. When I asked him where the toilet was, he ignored me, and I had to endure without knowing where to go.
A friend of ours had a wedding there, and that same man was walking in front of the cameras just for fun, and now he’s in their wedding photos! On top of that, the German liturgy they hold in the smaller church is generally very good, but many times they start singing in Greek, even though it’s supposed to be a German liturgy! If I want a Greek liturgy, I’ll go to a Greek service! When I asked the priest why they do this, he said: "We had a Greek guest, we must accommodate him." What??? Everyone here speaks only German!
I have to say, this is not a place for decent people. I'm still hurting after witnessing such things in a CHURCH, where I expected to find kindness, not cruelty....
Read moreThe Greek Orthodox Church (Griechenkirche), also known as the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church is located in the innere Stradt on Fleischmarkt street.
The church was built in 1787 by Theophil Edvard Hansen and is a rare example of a Byzantine style church found in Vienna. Here you can see an attractive red and gold striped (brick) exterior with classic arched windows. On the inside, there is an attractive narthex, featuring many columns, sloped ceiling and frescos.
The church nave is heavily frescos, including some nice paintings, chandelier and an attractive iticonostasis in the front of the nave. Like many churches in the first district, the nave was in very good condition and the attendant on duty was happy for us to take pictures inside.
Overall, we found the Griechenkirche a nice change of scenery from the mostly baroque and gothic style church scene in the first district. Looking very much more like church visits in Greece or Turkey, this is a pleasant surprise and interesting place to find and explore in the historic...
Read moreYou should change your staff. I have a chronic, genetically inherited bone disease, and I need to sit rather than stand. The church was full, and I found a place in the back of the chapel. One of the workers came and opened the window. I closed it because I was feeling cold, but he opened it again and rudely told me not to touch the window because it was too warm for the priest. He suggested that if I was feeling cold, I should stand in the front, and then he left. I could see that the priest was wearing at least two thick layers, if not more. I had to stand in the front. The liturgy was on Sunday with an Austrian priest and classical singing.
Usually, for your information, people air out the space before any event, and during the event, they close the window because you can catch a cold, in case you didn’t know. If you're feeling too warm, you can simply take off a layer of clothing or wear something very...
