Fountain of Minerva — Attraction in Brussels

An interesting fountain in the Place du Grand Sablon. At it’s centrepiece is a sculpture of Minerva. The sculpture depicts Minerva seat on a bench holding a shield while surrounded by cupids. On the shield is a relief portrait Emperor Franz I and Empress Maria-Theresa of Habsburg Austria, which at the time rule modern day Belgium as part of Austrian Netherlands.

A striking sculpture, but not in the best condition as many of the finer details have been worn away by time. At least it also dispenses...

BRAVEHEART A BRUXELLES In mezzo alla piazza del Grand Sablon, nel silenzio lunare di una città zombizzata in tempo di covid, dove i tradizionali caffè e bistrot restano tristemente chiusi e i pochi esseri umani ancora deambulanti si guardano da lontano con sospetto, si può ammirare questa fontana altrimenti "invisibile". Più che la fontana in sé, peraltro graziosa e dedicata a Minerva, è interessante la sua storia. Essa fu infatti costruita su disposizione testamentaria di un discendente del re scozzese Robert Bruce, reso celebre dal film Braveheart.
