This well presented museum (with air conditioning!) is well worth its entrance fee as it holds numerous important Neolithic, Thracian, and Roman artifacts. But what makes this museum really special is the unique mosaic of a Jewish Menorah -so rare, and the stunning Panagyurishte Gold Treasure, one of the most remarkable Thracian finds to date. (There are three replica sets displayed in three museums as the originals are often loaned for major exhibitions, like the recent Thracian Exhibition at the Getty Villa in Los Angeles.) Regardless, they are an ancient masterpiece, AND you’ll see other amazing finds as well....

Must-do if you have an hour and 5 euros to spare ! The Thracian peoples are among the oldest in Europe and Plovdiv was for many centuries one of the centers of this prehistoric and antique civilization. Many artefacts survived in AMAZING condition and were discovered in the past century... then to be collected and studied at the Plovdiv Archaeology Museum. Rare are the places where such a wide range of prehistoric, antique and medieval objects are preserved - 7.000 year-old tools and weapons, Macedonian and Greek coins, Roman-era mosaics and medieval armor - all in...

Wonderful museum with detailed descriptions of artifacts, including several very famous Thracian materials. Displays are well-lit and there are aids for seeing intricacies— mirrors for undersides of vessels, magnifying equipment for small details. Artifacts in the main exhibit are arranged chronologically, then thematically, then geographically. Finds are from the Neolithic/New Stone Age through the early medieval period, but the Thracian objects are definitely the highlight! The entire museum is also air conditioned, which is great during the summer!
