Although built in a very short time it's monumental architecture and rich interior decoration benefit from an unusual attention to the detail and quality of the used materials at the time of construction. The project, including the surrounding infrastructure are of unprecedented scale. The main building connects to several other architectural bodies through a vast network of underground tunnels. The legend says, although unconfirmed, that the number of underground levels equals those above ground and that the complex is linked to the presidential residence in Boyana - some 7-8 kilometers to the south - via secret tunnel large enough for a truck. During the first half of 2018 the Palace will host most of the events of the Bulgarian presidency of the Council of the EU so is currently under reconstruction.
