We finally found the gem we were after, and my only complaint is why wasn't this restaurant opened sooner!!!!!! They deserve a million stars, 5 stars won't do justice! It was a rainy Saturday evening, and we were shopping at Nordstrom when a signboard which read ‘Khazana by Chef Sanjeev Kapoor’ caught my attention leaving me surprised and intrigued. Padma-Shri MasterChef Sanjeev Kapoor is an emotion who not only ignited a passion for cooking in all of us, but also instilled a huge respect for our Indian cooking techniques, an epic history, intricacies of ingredients and most importantly our rich and diverse culture. I was on cloud9 when I saw the restaurant was in full service and then a chain of thoughts at supersonic speed started hinting, so it’s under a mile from our home so I ought to start ordering from here, my weekends are sorted!!! Well, it didn’t take a second for us to decide that we are going in, yes without any reservation, without being dressed for the occasion, we just walked in. We were welcomed by a cheerful lady who very kindly accommodated us without a reservation (it gets busier in the evening so would highly recommend reserving a table in advance). The first impression we had was “cool, they got the oomph factor” and I started mentally checking all the boxes off. The décor seems impressive, staff seem very warm, place looks hygienic, and it does set a perfect ambience for a mesmerizing evening, so we were all buckled up for the immersive and memorable experience this restaurant was about to offer! We ordered Alphonso Mango Lassi which was very refreshing and did scream “Alphonso-King of Mangoes” in every sip! From the appetizer menu, we ordered Original Recipe Bhatti Murg Tikka, which was very well presented, was cooked to perfection, had that subtle “tandoor” flavour and was outstandingly delectable. There was a decent wait among each course which was appreciated by my spouse and I as that gave us enough to time to have a hearty conversation. From the main course menu, we ordered the Kaali Kadhai Chicken with Garlic and Chive Naan. The appetizer had set the bar so high that we had to dig in immediately when the main arrived and boy it won our palates and hearts!!!! The chicken was succulent, bursting with kaleidoscopic flavours, the spice level was to our liking and its match with the pillowyyy soft naan took the whole experience to another level. We ordered their Salan Murg Biryani to go as we were full to our hearts content but didn’t want to miss out on trying that. An Indian dining experience feels incomplete without a Biryani- fit for the king, innit!! When we opened the container, the aroma set the stage for an amazing gastronomic experience, we were about to dive in, and boy did each morsel tantalised our palate harmoniously!!!!! Chef Akshay Nayyar had cent percent delivered on-Taste, Creativity, Emotion, Appeal and Passion. The servers had checked on us a few times throughout our meal and ensured we were enjoying it. When we sat there with satiated hearts and tummies, Tarannum very kindly shared the restaurant and Chef’s journey so far and introduced us to the Celebrity Chef Akshay Nayyar and we were so glad to share with him how his efforts resonated with our emotions, and he has already succeeded in creating a bond. I sincerely hope his creativity and innovation resonate with everyone and this restaurant is seen as an epitome of Indian cuisine and hospitality in Canada. In a nutshell, we enjoyed our dinner at Khazana-Toronto by Chef Sanjeev Kapoor, and it managed to put a sparkle to our evening!!!! My long review must have made it evident already!! Decor: Treat for the eyes!!!! Food: Interesting modern take on traditional Indian delicacies!!!!! Must try: Everything we tried was scrumptious, so just go for it and maybe more!!!!! For all the courses: Taste, texture and temperature were perfectttt!!!!! Service: Exemplary!!!! Cheers to many more such wonderful and memorable experiences :-)

Khazana is a modern fine dining Indian restaurant located in the heart of Toronto near the Eaton Centre and Yonge-Dundas Square. The chefs in this Toronto restaurant are trained by celebrity chef, Sanjeev Kapoor. Khazana’s other locations can be found in Milton, Brampton and Hamilton. The modern fusion menu showcases foods influenced by many regions in India. The chefs focus on using quality ingredients. The dine in and takeout menus are accessible through QR code system. I came here with hubby and a small group. We chose a variety of menu items including: Appetizers: Black Forest Truffle Chicken Tikka ($27) Clay oven charred chicken morsels with a mushroom and truffle marinade and mathania chili cream. Served on a skewer and bed of naan. Original Recipe Bhatti Murg Tikka ($23) The original recipe chicken tikka with home made spice marinade, and served with mint onion chutney. Sous Vide Lamb Chops ($32) Buttered asparagus, Andhra potatoes, mint and cashew sauce. The lamb was tender and perfectly cooked. Jodhpuri Papad Paneer Tikka ($22) West Indian chilli marinated cottage cheese, loaded with crunchy papadums & served with mathania peri-peri dip. Tandoori Parmesan Soya Chaap ($20) 24 hour marinated charred smokey soya skewers, parmigiana gremolata torched at the table. Must try! Main Courses: King Curry (butter chicken) ($24) Slow roasted chicken morsels in a buttery tomato gravy, finished with a dash of cream. Queen Curry - Paneer Makhani ($23) Fresh cottage cheese in a buttery tomato cream gravy. The sauce is poured into the bowl table-side. Creamy and delicious. Biryani: Shrimp Chettinad Biryani ($28). Delicious prawns curried with coconut milk and pot sealed with dum rice. The rice was still piping hot, and there was plenty of shrimp in this dish. Less spicy than other biryanis I’ve tried. Naan: We tried 3 different types of naan: Saffron and Almond Naan ($6.75) , Cheese and Tomato Naan ($6.25), & Garlic and Chive Naan ($6.00). I particularly enjoyed the saffron and almond naan, for the textural interest that the sliced almonds provided, and because I’ve not had this anywhere else. We also ordered several cocktails and some non-alcoholic drinks. These were not only visually tantalizing but refreshing to the palate. The food and drinks were all presented and plated beautifully. All of the dishes had the perfect mild to moderate amount of spice, with the option for increased spice level upon request. My favourite items include: • Homemade cider — I really enjoyed this non-alcoholic cider accentuated with the warmth of ginger beer and mulled spices, which had refreshing notes of mint. • Jodhpuri Papad Paneer Tikka — I appreciated the contrast of textures, between the firm but creamy paneer and crisp papadum topping • West Indian Tandoori Parmesan Soya Chaap — This dish surprised me in the best of ways. It was torched tableside, with the most amazing creaminess and smoky flavours. Would definitely order again. • King Curry - I enjoyed the tender pieces of chicken and the delicious sauce, which was best enjoyed with the delicious naan Despite it’s location in the heart of the city, this venue felt nestled away from the hustle and bustle of the downtown core. The restaurant is spacious, with an upscale yet unpretentious feel. Multiple seating areas, including modern upholstered booths, help to create an elevated yet cozy and romantic experience, suitable for a date night or celebration. There are several parking garages nearby Yonge-Dundas Square or at the Eaton Centre if you’re driving, or limited street parking can be found within walking distance from the restaurant. As the restaurant is located directly across the Eaton Centre, it is easily accessible for those taking transit. If you’re looking for an upscale dining experience in the downtown core, I highly recommend Khazana.

Khazana Toronto is the newest location of Chef Sanjeev Kapoor’s fine Indian Dinning - the other two locations can be found in Milton and Brampton. And I must say, they have chosen the perfect location in the heart of downtown and in walking distance from Eaton Centre and Young-Dundas Square. The ambience so elegant with the dim lighting and well-spaced tables that makes it perfect for both couples and groups. The staff are welcoming, nice and very professional. They even explain all the dishes on the menu if you ask them. Lol The menu is available through the QR Code attached to the tables. We were a group of super hungry people that couldn’t decide on what to order from their appealing modern fusion menu that included many signature dishes, like naans, appetizers, veggies, beef, lamb, chicken, seafood dishes and last but not least, biryani. So, we decided to go with the dishes that were unique to this restaurant and we couldn’t find in other Indian restaurants. We finally decided to order some appetizers, mains (both veggies and meat), biryani and naan and share them. It’s too bad we couldn’t share our drinks tho. Lol We started with signature drinks that the bartender suggested which he had come up with the recipes all by himself. He patiently explained listened to us and what we like for our drinks and suggested the best options. They were so visually fascinating that we didn’t want to drink them. Lol For appetizers, we went with: Jodhuri Papad Paneer Tikka ($22), Black Forest Truffle Chicken Tikka ($27), Sous Vide Lamb Chops ($32), Original Recipe Bhatti Murg Tikka ($23) and Tandoori Parmesan Soya Chaap ($20). All dishes were made from fresh ingredients and were flavoured right. So delicious. You can take it from a person who’s not big on vegetarian food that Tandoori Parmesan Soya Chaap was one of the best veggie dishes I’ve ever had. And it was torched at the table. Also, chicken and lamb pieces were so tender and fresh. You think we didn’t have room for the main dishes after the appetizers we had? You’re all wrong, cause we were eager to eat what we had ordered for entrée. Our main dishes included Shrimp Chettinad Biryani ($28), King Curry ($24) and Queen Curry ($28). I have tried biryani in many Indian restaurants, but I’d said this was by far the best Biryani I’ve ever had. Curry dishes tasted amazing, too. I never thought paneer could taste this great. Lol We topped up our dishes with some of their signature naans that we couldn’t find in any other Indian restaurant: Saffron and Almond ($6.75), Garlic and Chive ($6) and Cheese and Tomato ($6.25). I’d say whoever came up with these tastes for a naan was a genius and my favourite of all the naans was Saffron and Almond Naan. My overall opinion of this place is it’s obvious there has been a lot of thought and effort put into putting this unique menu together and even more effort into making is so deliciously and presenting it with such care and delicacy.

Edited at the bottom after my second visit - pretty inconsistent in their service… First visit review: I have been wanting to visit Khazana for a while and finally got a chance last weekend. And I was in heaven!!!! This is the first fine dine Indian restaurant that served authentic Indian cuisine. The kind I get in Mumbai at good Indian restaurants! And trust me, this is the inly place that serves such good mouth-watering, soul-satisfying Indian vegetarian heavenly delicacies. I have tried Indian fine dine in Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Milton, Malton, Oakville, Elora, London, Edmonton and Jasper, but not a single place comes close to the food served here! I absolutely loved their menu! And in order to try most of their items, I opted for their Vegetarian tasting menu, and oh boy, I am glad I chose that. This is what it contained: - masala papad tart for amouse bouche - appetizer platter with panner, kabab and aloo (paneer was made in house for sure, so tender juicy and flavourful. Kabab was like galouti kebav, absolutely melt-in-mouth. Aloo was so well seasoned in imli-khajoor chutney and tandoori favours) - jackfruit kofta (to die for!), dal makhani, paneer butter masala, biryani rice and bread platter (with honestly the best Garlic Naan in Canada!) - dessert tasted very diabetic friendly, not too sweet, just enough to get the satisfaction. Star dishes: paneer tikka, kathal koftas, garlic naan and kebabs. Best part: even after eating so much, I didn’t feel bloated or heavy at all. Which means no added soda, and fresh ingredients! Also, my friend ordered chicken biryani. She loved it. But even though she is a hardcore carnivore, she loved my vegetarian food more! I am coming back with more friends!! Absolutely loved my experience here. Special shoutout to Kiran for her great service! Only thing, I’d expect them to be a little more observant being a fine dine place. It was my friend’s birthday and I did a whole gift unwrapping at the table and even informed one of the other servers. But there was no response or added service for that (no offer to even write a birthday message on our dessert plate at extra cost too)… that was the only expectation that fell short. Review after second visit: The second time I went here, the food wasn’t as good. Jackfruit koftas were too ripe and the gravy was bad, way too sweet with a lot of kasuri methi.. the service was super slow and not that good either. I honestly didn’t feel like leaving a tip at all…, I had to ask for take away boxes three times in a span of 40 minutes before I could leave. Found this place to be pretty inconsistent with their service and their food… expected the same experience as the first time but felt disappointed. Definitely not worth the prices you pay here.

Overall, I really liked the place and can recommend it; however, there are things to be improved: PROS: + very kind and hospitable staff, accommodating and servicing us smoothly + The ambiance is great. + SHAHI HALWA PIE ($13) was one of the best desserts I have ever had. Super soft, tender texture and even better when flavored by boiling cream drizzle. + The food presentation is great and the portion size is also good. + GARLIC AND CHIVE NAAN ($6) was really good though pricey for its size. We had to order it as the "king Curry" didn't come with any rice or naan. CONS - LAMB CHOPS INDO PERSIAN BIRYANI ($29) had a nice presentation with a naan at top. But there are a couple of things to complain about! They claim they use Saffron in the rice (probably to make it Persian). As a Persian, I would say you should never ever mix saffron with any other spices. Saffron is not dominant when mixed with Curry or other similar spices. So, a good chef should know that it should be the only ingredient of the rice. The second mistake was the lamb chops cuts. They were not cut properly. That's why the meat size was super small. Cutting lamb chops is always tricky and needs a good butcher. They did a bad job, and the bone didn't have enough meat. I should add that it comes with Raita (Indian yogurt sauce) which was delicious. - KING CURRY (ORIGINAL BUTTER CHICKEN) ($24) was not as I expected. They used large cubes of chicken breasts in it, which had a really tough texture. Maybe smaller pieces or chicken legs would improve it. The taste was great. Another disappointing thing about it is that they do not serve any bread or rice with it. It should come with something; otherwise, no one eats butter chicken as a standalone stew. As the restaurant has the name of a seemingly famous person in India, my expectations were higher.

Appetizer: Non-veg platter, with 2 pcs each Truffle Chicken Tikka, Smoked Salmon, Sous Vide Lamb Chops. Chicken and lamb were well cooked and succulent. Spicy enough for the Indian pallet. Salmon was a little dry but nevertheless nice. Mains: Deggi murg korma - chicken was boneless and well marinated, curry was nutty and medium spicy. Only downside was that we got all breast pieces, thigh/leg piece would have been softer and more flavourful. Butter tandoori roti - soft with a slightly crispy bottom crust, the buttery goodness was a thumbs up. Wish they had a garlic butter naan option though. Lamb boti biryani - cooked using the dum technique, the aromas that hit you as soon as you opened the covering were wonderful. Masala was appropriate, spice level was medium, mutton could have been a little better cooked to make it softer. Also could have used much less oil/ghee. However, overall it was excellent. Overall: Service was friendly and ambience was perfect for Downtown Toronto. The platter was expensive, especially considering that the meat pieces were small. But the serving size of the mains and their taste were worth their cost. Would have been better if there were more food options. Masalas and spice levels were very good. By far the best Indian food in the city, compared to other restaurants especially those owned by Canadians or foreigners (the spice there is never spicy enough for us). 4/5 stars - food was worth the hype, would definitely recommend others to try out Suggestion: Unrelated to the food and price but I feel it's important for each restaurant to take note of.. The women's toilet was clean but requires a sanitary bin inside each cubicle, even if its a small one, it's more convenient and hygienic that way (than when the bin is only beside the sink area).
