The Attic Hair Studio — Attraction in Vancouver

I've never felt the need to leave a negative review before, but after much thought I have to say how bad my experience was. The end result has always been good at this salon, no issues there, but a major word of warning with regard to pricing:

I was quoted before my appointment and told that blonding services are charged hourly, and I was prepared to pay up to 3 hrs worth of blonding if it was what was needed for my hair. But, what I was not aware of, (and was since confirmed to me by the salon manger) was that stylists decide in advance how much they will charge before seeing your hair. I was taken aback then when at the end of my 2hr long appointment (half head of highlights and a haircut), I was charged for 3hrs (1 hr haircut, 2 hrs of blonding) of services because the stylist thought they might have needed longer. I literally spent the last hour of my appointment sitting at home wondering what I was still paying $120 for.

When I reached out, I was told that when you book, you are committing to pay the hourly rate for however long your appointment is booked for, instead of paying by the hour for services given (which I would argue saying that you charge "hourly" insinuates). When I shared that this did not sit well with me, I was given a $60 refund, with the insistence that this did not reflect an admission that any mistake had been made and was told in a roundabout way that I was not welcome back (ie. "we think it's best you choose another salon"). I found this to be a very bizarre way of addressing what was a genuine complaint from a repeat customer.

I notice that they now say on their website that price per hour is decided on before the appointment begins, during consultation, but what really warrants mentioning is that a minimum of hours you will be charged for will be decided for you when you book your appointment, unless you come in for a consultation each time. Mentioning this would go a long way towards providing the transparency that is mentioned on the website. The salon and stylists have the right to operate under the pricing and policies they see fit and as a customer I definitely feel it is appropriate to share my opinion that this policy does not reflect value for money...

I have never been to the same salon twice in my whole life until I met Lucy at The Attic hair. I have a little social anxiety so the idea of making small talk with someone really stressed me out but Lucy is so great that I always feel super comfortable and happy to chat with her. She is such an authentic and approachable human.

When I first met her, I wanted to transition from waist length dyed dark brown hair to waist length Khaleesi blond ie, white hair. She was super helpful and honest with what realistically could be done with my hair at the time and made a plan for me to transition over a few visits. After we decided to chop off a little length, it was easy to transition to my desired hair colour over 2-3 visits. My hair, to this day, is extremely healthy because of those strategic decisions we made.

Prior to Covid, she would always have little vegan snacks in her drawer for me (because I'm vegan) and would offer me coffee/tea/water throughout root the process. She is SO considerate.

The studio itself is really nice. All the stylists walk around complimenting each other and checking out how everyone is progressing. Atlas is the resident dog and he is really lovely too! He is always happy for a head scratch but won't pay too much attention to you unless you have a stash of treats in your pocket.

Ashley Caswell has been my stylish for 5 years now and I cannot say enough about her as a human and as a hairstylist!

I am one of those people who has an idea of what I want I want my hair to look like, but absolutely no expertise in how to make it work. Despite being totally vague every time I go in, Ash is fantastic at taking my ideas and turning them into stunning and stylish color/style/cuts that really work for my type of hair and, honestly, for my lifestyle/level of commitment. She is an expert colorist and is truly meticulous about the results she delivers... my hair always looks and feels beautiful and healthy when I walk out.

Added bonus... Ash is also a serious pleasure to spend a couple of hours with! She is dynamic, funny, insightful... I have a total girl-crush, what can I say!

When I got engaged there wasn't even a question about who I would trust with my hair for the day. Ashley did my (and my bridesmaids) hair and the whole experience was nothing short of her usual greatness. At the hair trial, Ashley took her time and really worked out the best way to achieve the look I wanted. Day of, she was the perfect addition to the morning, and instantly clicked with my family and friends. My hair turned out BEAUTIFULLY, it looked natural (not overly styled) and stayed strong all day. It also looked fantastic in the photos!
