The Carr house is kept up beautiful and a must see during opening hours when in Victoria BC. From what I understand they also host workshops for children - that must be so inspiring. Personally I loved the bathroom with windows instead of walls. It’s to dream of! The antique furniture, carpets and upright piano with original paintings against the walls make Emily’s upbringing there touching and personal. Alicia Singh, a heritage interpreter, was so accommodating during my visit and updated me with special opening times during the holidays, shared some stories and showed me around. The souvenir shop was a treasure. I bought coasters, tiles, fridge magnets and a print for myself, but also as gifts. High quality and colourful, I brought home souvenirs of historical evidence - Emily Carr, a woman who made such a meaningful contribution to the arts. Thanks again Alicia for sharing the special opening hours and stories about...

A little bit smaller than frida's house in mexico city. Interior look into her life growing up. Free 30min quasi-documentrary in one of the rooms. Self guided tour (a plastic sheet with info on it given out) You're welcome to sit in the patio and enjoy a tea+cookies or lemonade for free. There's pencil crayons as well for kids or adults who feel inspired to sketch. Lovely garden! Won't take much time to go through the rooms I even if you read an hour maybe two at most. Gift store has to little space to work in same room as the desk very tiny. There's room for about 5 cars to park in the front yard. Be warned horse tours drive by this place and bike tours will pull up into the front yard as well. Entrance is through the back...

Felt a bit cheated as many items were 'presumed' to be owned by Emily Carr or the house 'thought' to be setup like it was. Mostly a lot of random clutter on display and not a coheisve experience. Disappointed we could not visit upstairs because the house keepers live there. Mostly tourist trap to sell some local artists work - which is usually fine but should not be done in this context. Video in the screening room was 30minutes which means we could not easily join in the middle. Would have been better to break up the video and place...

Worth it! Pleasant surprise! Kate the site manager gives a very personal yet informative tour. Learned lots of the little details about Emily Carr and her life, and her plucky outlook! They also fit us into the day last minute, speaking to the kindness and enthusiasm of the staff. Can’t wait to see the home fully developed into a community centre, artist-in-residence programme, and historical site.

What a lovely piece of history. The tour was absolutely excellent, the plaques around the garden are thought-provoking and the restoration work is impressive. Loved learning about the Carr family, the home design of the time, and the trappings of colonial society in BC. Highly recommend booking a tour if you’re interested in period interior design, slice-of-life Canadian history and/or art!
