We were happy to be here on opening day for the season. It was raining but we still got to go for our ride. The office is where you meet to fill out the waivers, get weighed and await your adventure. Since we were a family of 5 we had to split up. There is lots of info to look at including an olympic torch from the 2010 games you can do a photo op with.
We walked over to the track and learned more about the sport and specifically this track. We were organized in to our groups and brought up to the top of the track by a van. When it was our turn we loaded in and met our guide. Her name was Tirza. She is a 17 year old skeleton athlete who is training for Worlds. It was fascinating to hear her story and I can't wait to watch for her in the coming years.
At the top we learned about how the teams prep then we started the walk down the track. We started about 1/3 of the way down the track so we got to walk along the track and see the turns up close.
When we arrived at the start for the ride we went into a building to fit our helmets. While the sled in front of us were going we all rang the cow bells like in the real bobsleigh runs. It was finally our turn and we loaded in to the sleigh. Our driver Jim took some pics of us and loaded up. Snowy pushed us off and we were on our way. Jim had a GoPro on his helmet so we could get a video of the ride.
It went by so fast but was amazing to be going around all the corners and up on the walls of the turns. It lasts under a minute and we were climbing out to get our official pic and commemorative certificate. We decided to pay the $20CA to get the footage of our rides. They put it on a flash drive for you to take and share.
It was an exhilarating experience and now I want to do it in the winter to see how fast the...
Read moreMy brother, father, and I did the bobslegh ride this summer, and it was a very unique and fun experience. From the start, you are greeted at a very nice guest check-in building by very friendly employees. You are given some information on the track, which is the fastest in the world, and the vehicle that you chose to ride (bobsleigh). You are then taken up to the track, where you are given more interesting information about the track itself and the athletes who practice there, which also happen to be the guides. Once that is done, you get to start your ride with a professional pilot, and down you go! In about 50 exhilarating seconds you are down where you started, having conquered the fastest track in the world. The organisation is a non-for-profit that uses its earnings to pay for the training of many athletes, including Canadian olympic athletes, so the employees put care into your experience and make it as fun and safe as it can be. It is definitely worth doing the summer bobsleigh ride of 90 km/hr, but I would also love to come back to experience the 120-km/hr winter bobsleigh ride. Must do it once...
Read moreExcellent place to do something new and exciting. We did the bobsled (great family activity), a great ride! Highly recommended for everyone. This is the real bobsled course that was used in the 2010 Olympics. HOWEVER, be aware that bobsledding can have an effect on your body. Both my wife and I are still experiencing back pains, four days after our ride so if you have back problems, you should consider the possibility of a sore back.
Great thing about doing the ride, your payment will go to help athletes (the real ones) train at the facility. The money they make on tourists keeps the sliding center open and brings down the cost for training athletes. They only have a few runs each day for the public because they are not making a profit, they charge just enough to cover costs so they can keep the training facility open. Booking in advance is a good idea since there is such a limited number of runs a day. I liked that my dollars are going to help people train for...
