Overall: I have regularly visited Whistler for holidays for almost 20 years. My experience in unit 211 has single handedly made me question why I should stay at The Apens again. DO NOT book unit 211 in the summer: it's an absolute sauna with NO air conditioning, a truly painful bed, aging and cheap furnishings and questionable cleanliness.
A) Unit 211:
The SW facing unit it was regularly well into the 30's INSIDE the unit. To make a stay even somewhat acceptable, the owner needs to invest in at least two AC units; one for the living room and one for the bedroom. A single standard 12K BTU unit will be inadequate.
Bed: I honestly enjoy and prefer a firm mattress and the master bed was garbage. I woke every morning with a sore lower back and I do core exercises regularly. This bed was actually painful for both my spouse and I. The fitted sheet struggled to stay on the mattress each night, the pillows were completely unsupportive, and the synthetic linens are visibly aging.
Kitchen: Several of the cooking pots and pans need to be replaced. A few have lose/failing handles and the only frying pan had a heavily worn and scratched teflon surface which is noted to be dangerous to human health. The refrigerator was at its coldest setting and struggled to keep food cold. Cleanliness: I dropped a utensil on the floor in the kitchen, got down to pick it up and had the unfortunate experience of seeing that the kickboard under the cabinets were splattered with old dried on food.
Carpet: It's a rental, so some stains are to be expected. This carpet is nearing critical mass. Stained, crusty stains abound in high traffic areas.
The bathroom clean and functioned well with the exception of the 1980's era light fixture over the sink which worked intermittently when you redirected the light so a person could actually see their reflection in the mirror.
Patio/deck: The cheap faded plastic deck furniture and stained floor (from leaky building envelope) were not inviting at all.
Unit overall: I have stayed at WB dozens of times in many condos. Unit 211 at The Aspens gives the crystal clear impression that the owner's goal is to maximize profits at all costs. It appears they make the absolute minimal capital investment to replace any failed piece with the cheapest available on the market. The unit gives the distinct impression of being a student's apartment, at best.
B) Building: Security: I could enter the bldg all the way to my unit door from various external doors without using the key fob. Multiple gates/doors with fob-only access do not work as intended.
Bike Lockers: Finally, good news. They were solid, and in good condition with fences of expanded steel sheeting and functioning fob access. Don't waste your time in the crowded P1 cage, go down to P2.
Pool: A good size and nice temperature but the pool chemicals seem to be on the harsh side. After two days I was dreading going for a swim with my son due to how dry my skin was after, and I was a lifeguard for 9 years.
Overall: With full...
Read moreArrival experience is not great, especiallyafter a full day of driving, mostly in a snowstorms. I knowingly came with a rooftop cargo box making it an overheight vehicle. I fully expecting to have to empty out my box, remove it and store it somewhere. In fact that option was provided upon checkin from one of the desk attendants(a secure bicycle cage in the garage was offered) . So...after struggling to find a spot in the uncovered roundabout in the front of the building, searching every inch of the property for a luggage cart(found one in the parking garage). I finally emptied my entire vehicle and box in a full on blizzard. It literally took 4 trips with the luggage cart that had a broken wheel to get everything to the 2nd floor on the only working elevator that was being constantly used. Only after this entire hassle, as I asked the desk attendant about the parking fee did she feel the need to tell me that they actually had "overheight vehicle parking" underground just outside the secure gate of the parking area. I wanted to throat punch her I was so incensed. Anyway, without much issue, I stayed to the right of the parking entry and had many inches to spare. I was able to park in one of the FIVE over height vehicle spots available. Our room was adequate, cozy, well appointed, with a great view. One of the 3 hottubs was not operating so the tub near the gym was packed whenever we used it. Not a bad scene, but most people in it we had just seen ski in and hadnt rinsed off so you can imagine how the water must've turned... There are rules against bringing skis and boards into rooms, but we saw dozens of people do it and even storing them on balconies. Guess we were some of the few following the rules that while repeated often and in all documents, do not seem to...
