This is an extremely unique museum in the world---it is located in a lovely park full of vendors selling ice creams and empanada, full of life, and the museum is located in a lovely building. Although it was not big which was why we first visited after 3pm to spend the extra afternoon hours---we were immediately attracted---not only does it offer interesting classes almost back to back, but also the staff members really take care of each visitors, actively approach each child and adult visitor to make sure everyone has a good understanding of what is going on. Even though it is small, it is full of life and knowledge---on 2nd floor the planets of solar system is displayed according to the sizes which is very interesting. It is true that everything is in Spanish so it is more like a school. My son unfortunately broke his elbow when in Santiago and our stay was extended, after he had his surgery we visited the museum twice more during the last few days. The idea behind everything is education, there are actually only 3 or 4 staff members but as they are so active, all kids can feel that they are well taken care of. This is totally different from Mirada in Santiago---although Mirada is bigger, it is very empty, more like a playground for kids to play on their own, there were only a total of 2 lectures a day---for one of the lectures my son waited for 20 mins only to be informed that as my two kids are the only 2 audience the lecture is to be cancelled, but here, the teachers told us anything the kids are interested, they will come and explain! This is a museum with a soul.
The few staff members are just great educators full of passion for both science, technology, but also their country. They were talking about the finance system of the park, about Chilean economy, everywhere they showed love and care of the country. These are great people just to meet. My son is particularly fond of the rocket experiment which he watched 3 or 4 times.
This is also much more affordable for ordinary chileans---the tickets are only 1000 pesos per person, which is only slightly more than 1 dollar---in comparison to 5000 or 6000 charged by Mirado, and that this one is so centrally located, accessible by metro. The science museum in Mexico city can be compared to this one but it probably has hundreds of employees with round the clock lectures, with a fee of around $20 US dollar which is not even affordable for everyone. It is clear that the management behind this museum is trying to make it affordable for all kids.
It is true that i only understand what they say through my son's translation but even with the language barrier i could feel their passion for their work, i can feel that they are doing things which they truly enjoy. There is a Chinese proverb which all Chinese kids must learn at school: 山不在高,有仙则名。水不在深,有龙则灵---which translates as: The mountain is not famous due to its height, but which kind of deity who lives in it, the water is not famous due to its depth but the type of dragon which lives in it. Through the operations of this lovely museum I finally understanding the meaning of this Chinese proverb. This museum is the most success example of what a small museum can do...
