M+: A Must-Visit for Modern Art Enthusiasts in Hong Kong

Tucked away in the West Kowloon Cultural District, M+ is a hidden gem for modern art enthusiasts. Boasting a diverse collection of 20th and 21st-century visual culture, encompassing visual art, design, architecture, and moving image, this museum offers a captivating journey through the artistic landscapes of Asia and beyond.

Stepping into the museum, I was immediately struck by the building's modern architecture and spacious galleries. The natural light pouring in through the high windows created a warm and welcoming atmosphere, perfect for immersing oneself in the artwork.

M+ museum interior, Hong Kong During my visit, I was particularly captivated by the exhibit of Yayoi Kusama, a renowned Japanese artist known for her immersive installations. Her signature polka-dot patterns and mirrored surfaces created mesmerizing spaces that were both playful and thought-provoking.

Yayoi Kusama exhibit at M+, Hong Kong Beyond the Kusama exhibit, the museum's collection offered something for everyone. From intricate Chinese landscape paintings to contemporary installations exploring social and political themes, there was a constant sense of discovery and wonder.

One thing that impressed me most was the museum's commitment to showcasing the work of Asian artists. While Western art museums often dominate the cultural landscape, M+ provides a much-needed platform for voices from the East.

Overall, my visit to M+ was a truly enriching experience. The museum's diverse collection, engaging exhibits, and stunning architecture make it a must-visit for anyone interested in modern art. And if you're ever in Hong Kong with some time to spare between meals, I highly recommend taking a walk to M+. You won't be disappointed.

Highlights:

Diverse collection of 20th and 21st-century visual culture

Engaging exhibits that appeal to a wide range of interests

Stunning architecture with natural light and spacious galleries

Strong focus on showcasing the work of Asian artists

Perfect place to spend a few hours between meals

Rating: 5/5

Wow. I have been to 10+ museums in different areas of Hong Kong and this might have been the best one that I've been to yet. This is easily in my top 5 contemporary art museums now. The price is $120 HKD for a standard adult ticket which i thought was a tad high at first, but i thought it was an excellent value by the end of my visit. If you're carrying anything bigger than a small laptop sized bag, you'll also need to check it into the lockers at $5 an hour. I had only 2.5 hrs here but wish I had more time to slowly take in all the artwork and read everything. You can easily spend up a whole day here if you take time in the media room, cinema, cafe, and enjoy the rooftop cafe. Everything is so modern and aesthetic, you really can't get a bad photo here!

Taking a bus here is the most direct way (2 mins walking) and probably will take the same amount of time as the MTR if you are around the area already. The location is a little out of the way, but it does mean that it is quiet and not packed liked some of the other areas. I'm now recommending this place for all my friends. The media viewing room, main hall exhibit, and the rooftop terrace is free. If you have the time, the terrace offers a much more relaxing time than the TST waterfront/avenue of stars. Plenty of tables, chairs, and shade for you to slowly enjoy the panoramic view with no obstructions.

I can't wait to come back here and enjoy all the exhibitions again. Yes, the halls are big and it's easily to lose track of where to go, but i think that's part of the beauty and exploration experience. There's enough content that even if they do not add anything new next time, I'm sure i could find something new in what I quickly glossed over...

WORST customer experience ever and would NOT recommend it to anyone. Bought my ticket online for a special night event (live music + workshop + sharing session + exhibition entry).

At the entry, I double confirmed with the staff and was told the exhibition is still on but only to find out the exhibition was actually CLOSED and was not allowed for entry anymore as soon as I arrived!

They said the exhibition is usually scheduled to close at 10 PM for special event but this is NOT mentioned anywhere on the ticket/website!! I would NOT have bought the ticket if I know the closing time is 10PM (It stated on the website the event will be held between 7pm -12:00mn, with no further info on the closing time of workshop/exhibition or whatsoever). What’s worst is neither the workshop nor the sharing session was available at that time. So I basically just paid $180 for NOTHING?!

Called the CS and it's just another huge disappointment, the CS staff (Suzanna Li) is not helpful and obviously failed to understand the situation - she only keeps repeating that used ticket cannot be refunded and no further arrangement will be made like a broken recording machine. Totally ignore the fact that they've given out false & misleading information in the first place and did not provide the service they should have provided. I've paid the ticket for all 4 activities but 3 out of 4 was not available to me at that night . (If I was there solely for the DJ music, I'd certainly go to LFK and not here at M+) and now you're saying no refund can be made?!?!

WHAT A JOKE M+...

One word to describe it, huge, but unfortunately that is all. From afar, it is one of ugliest buildings along the Kwoloon waterfront and probably one of ugliest I have seen anywhere. It is like a huge inverted "T" construction section. For an art museum, the architecture is a travesty. I must confess I skipped the especial Sigg exhibition because of the hour long queue. Other halls had various exhibits loosely grouped into themes but I couldn't see much correlation. Some I would call pseudo art as illustrated in the photos. The museum could do with some large center pieces with wow factor for visitors to remember by. There was a tiny coffeeshop with about ten indoor seats and a few tables and chairs outside, completely inadequate for the size of the museum and number of visitors, so forget a coffee break. Having said all that, it is nevertheless a welcome addition to Hong Kong, a place for people to escape the Summer heat. Update June 2024, more pictures. I revisited after 3 years. My 2021 review remains broadly valid. This time, I had a better smartphone with an ultra-wide lens to do justice to the scale of the building. I also enjoyed more this time because all the exhibition halls were open and there were fewer people during lunch time. I was particularly touched by the 'Old People's Home' exhibit in one hall, created in 2007, its message is still very apt today. Revised up to 4 stars.
