The Sponza Palace is one of the most beautiful buildings from the time of the Republic of Ragusa. The palace was built between 1516 and 1522 and clearly shows the transition from Gothic to Renaissance architectural style. The palace is one of the few buildings to survive the 1667 earthquake, giving an impression of the architectural opulence of Ragusa. The Sponza Palace used to house the mint and customs, but now houses the state archives of the city of Dubrovnik, which dates back to 1022 and contains, among other things, the charter of the founding of the Republic of Ragusa from 1358.

Sponza Palace, Dubrovnik. Μια από τις αίθουσές του στεγάζει ένα μικρό μουσείο (Memorial room of the defenders of Dubrovnik), αφιερωμένο στους υπερασπιστές της πόλης, διατηρώντας στη μνήμη τις απώλειες, τις καταστροφές και την τραυματική εμπειρία που γνώρισε το Dubrovnik κατά τη διάρκεια της πολιορκίας του το 1991.

Currently being renovated so only the ground floor is accessible (not sure if you are able to access the upper floors anyway), so not a huge amount to see, but it sure is pretty! There's a small room to one side dedicated to the defenders of Dubrovnik during the war in the 90's which is worth checking out if war history is your thing. There is also modern art on display around the palace walls. It seems to be a great place for wedding photography too as I saw a few brides being photographed here.

The Sponza Palace is a stunning architectural gem that shouldn't be missed. Its Gothic and Renaissance blend creates a visually captivating exterior, while the interior houses a poignant memorial to the city's defenders. Documents from the State Archives are marvelous, and many fascinating exhibits offer glimpses into Dubrovnik's past. Take a moment to appreciate the intricate details of this iconic building and pay respects to those who sacrificed for their city.

Beautiful palace in a great location inside the old town of Dubrovnik. Highly recommended to everyone and is a must visit place in Dubrovnik. Very beautiful palace, very old but very well preserved, with a lot of historg. There are also many other buildings you can visit in Dubrovnik such as the oldest pharmacy in Europe which is still open and the museum but you should also visit this palace.
