If you like castles, I definitely recommend visiting Špilberk! It is a huge castle with a lot of exhibitions, ranging from the makings of the castle over its history as a prison up to modern-day Brno. There is art and sculptures, you can see old parts of the walls and castle, there are interactive exhibitions for kids, rooms showing how the prisoners lived and torture methods, and much more.

It includes the MMB Museum, the Tower and the Royal Chapel, the Treasures of Armoury, the underground water tanks and the casemates. You have to buy all the tickets individually. I bought one for the Museum, the Armoury and the Tower and Chapel and paid around 15€. Sadly, the water tanks were closed at the time I visited the castle.

How much time should you plan: A whole day if you want to see everything the castle has to offer 3+ hours for the exhibitions in the Museum 20 min for the Treasures of Armoury 30-40 min for the Tower and Chapel

What I would have liked to be done differently: All the rooms with exhibitions in the museum have detailed info panels in Czech. The translations for tourists are found in booklets hanging on walls or given out by the staff. The booklets only cover an overview of the parts that are exhibited. They are not detailed and for some things, there is no translation at all. You have to translate it yourself if you want to know more. Some of the signs for orientation were only in Czech, too. The booklets are in English and German, only in some rooms they were in French (if I am not mistaken) and only in the Treasures of Armoury I found an italian translation. The quality of translation could be better, the English was good, some of the German (in the Armoury) was pretty bad and the sentences didn't make sense, otherwise it was okay. It would also be very helpful if the castle could offer an estimation of time for the average stay.

There is a Bistro outside of the castle. The park around it is beautiful, especially in autumn and ideal for walks. The view is stunning, you can see the whole city of Brno and the mountains around it. It is definitely worth a visit, but plan your time...

The museums are nice, castle is pretty, great view, park is good. Only issue is the ticket checking. They have someone check your ticket at what seems like every room, my ticket was checked at least 6 times. Also, I bought a digital ticket but the guy in the armory had apparently never seen one before. So he very loudly wouldn't let me in. I tried to tell him I had a digital ticket but he didn't understand. He kind of made a scene. I went to the ticket office and the woman there had to come with me to him to explain what a digital ticket was. That took 5 minutes for some reason. And then I was let in. The guy said sorry but at that point I spent about 15 seconds in there and was just annoyed with the whole situation and left. I don't know why you wouldn't train your staff on e-tickets. I also don't know why he had to be so obnoxious about it. He didn't know how to do his job and embarrassed me. Even if he hadn't been trained, he can't read? Are people forging museum tickets? Idk, obviously the ticket situation left a...

What a bad castle. We've been to dozens all over Europe and this is by far the worst. Everything is billed separately, so be prepared to get nickel and dimed to see very little

Firstly, we showed up at 1600 thinking it was open until 2300 based on the hours input by the business on Google only to be dismissively told there was no time to see most in of the structure.

We got tickets for the "treasures of the depository"... Which consisted of several canvas chairs that people sat on during the discussions to break up Czechoslovakia. Not treasures like you'd expect to find. We breezed through in under 5 minutes because it was so boring.

This left us with no time to see the treasures of the armory.

The tower was not worth the climb, considering the views around the outer walls were as good if not better. In fact, the best part was the Mendel information before you ever got to the castle doors. Save yourself the cash and just go read those and take...

Highly recommend the hike up through the parkland forest to get to this fortress. You can enjoy quite a bit of the outside for free, however there are several areas and exhibits and sights you can only enjoy if you have purchased passes for them. The underground dungeon/jail system is eerie and brings forth life of being a prisoner over the many centuries of military use, including WW2. There is also the bell tower to climb with outstanding 360 degree views across the city. Inside the fortress are exhibits about the history of Brno. There are 2 cafes to relax in for a drink or cake or a meal - quite affordable and with a nice atmosphere. Overall it is an excellent way to spend half your day (several hours). If you have mobility issues you will be limited with the number of things you will be able to access as there are a LOT of stairs and lots of uneven ground (historical flooring surfaces worn over centuries).

I visited the castle and the exhibition was a bit boring. Whereas I was expecting the exhibition to explain more about the castle, the exhibition was more about the use of the castle as prison over the centuries for various ethno-nationalists during the period of Austro-Hungarian Empire. The exhibition was divided into separate sections for the different parts of the empire such as Italians, Czech etc, and to be quite frank, a bit repetitive and boring The permanent exhibition also included a museum of medieval to pre-modern history of Brno (virtually all in Czech), and an exhibition of the architectural history of Brno which was much more interesting because it had a lot more English and architecture happens to be an interesting topic for me. It’s a challenging climb up to the top where the castle is, and to be honest the views from the castle over the city was the best part of the visit.
