If you're visiting Tallinn, Hellemann Tower and the Town Wall Walkway is an absolute must-see. We visited during a one-day stop from a cruise, and this ended up being one of our favorite experiences in the city.
Climbing the tower and walking along the preserved medieval wall gives you a truly unique perspective of Tallinn’s stunning Old Town. The views from the top are absolutely breathtaking — you get to look out over the red rooftops, church spires, and cobblestone streets in every direction. It’s also one of the best spots to really appreciate the layout and charm of the walled city from above. Definitely bring your camera — the photo opportunities are incredible!
The tower itself is well maintained, and the narrow, slightly uneven stone steps add to the authentic medieval feel. The walkway stretches a good distance along the wall and connects a few different towers, with information panels along the way that offer some historical insight.
It's not overly crowded (especially in the morning), and it’s very reasonably priced — making it one of the best value attractions in Tallinn. If you’re up for a bit of a climb, the panoramic views alone make it more than worth it.
Highly recommended for anyone who wants to soak in the atmosphere, history, and unmatched views of one of Europe’s most charming...
Read moreTallinn City Wall is the defensive wall constructed around the city of Tallinn in Estonia. The first wall around Tallinn was ordered to be constructed by Margaret Sambiria in 1265 and for that reason, it was known as the Margaret Wall. This wall was less than 5 m high and about 1.5 m thick at its base. Since that time it has been enlarged and strengthened. The walls and the many gates are still largely extant today. This is one of the reasons that Tallinn's old town became a World Heritage Site. The walls were enlarged in the fourteenth century, and citizens of Tallinn were required to turn out for guard duty, which meant to wear their armour and demonstrate their readiness to face off invaders.
A good opportunity to get a glimpse of the town's Medieval defenses can be found at the Hellemann Tower, which stands adjacent Müürivahe street next to Old Town's knit market. The 3-storey tower dates back to the 14th century and at different times was used as a prison and a weapons store.
Nowadays it serves a more peaceful purpose: housing an art gallery. Visitors not only get to see the tower, but they can also walk along a 200-metre stretch of the town wall, from where they'll get fantastic views of the...
Read moreThe Hellemann Tower and Town Wall Walkway offers a fascinating glimpse into medieval Tallinn's defensive architecture. As part of the city's historic fortification system, this impressive structure provides incredible views over the Old Town's red-tiled rooftops.
The tower's authentic medieval atmosphere is a definite highlight, and walking along the ancient wall gives you a real sense of stepping back in time. The preserved architecture and the ability to explore the actual defensive walkway that guards once patrolled makes this a unique historical experience.
However, winter visitors should exercise extreme caution. The narrow stone steps can become quite treacherous when covered in snow, making the ascent and descent particularly challenging. The combination of limited space and slippery conditions requires careful navigation.
If visiting during snowy conditions, wear boots with good grip and take your time on the stairs. Consider visiting during drier weather if you're concerned...
