The stairs of history.
Patkuli staircase is a historical staircase in the center of old city of Tallinn, on the northern side of Toompea Hills.
This stairway connects the lower town from the Toompea Baltic station side. Patkul staircase begins at Nunne street (Nunne tänava) next near Snell moat (Schnelli tiiki), an artificial moat, surrounding Toompark (Toompargi) at the north side of Toompea hill, and along the ridge rises to Peace Court Street (Rahukohtu tänav) in the area between 3 and 5 buildings is located the Patkul viewing platform.
These stairs were built in 1903 and opened on 6th October 1903. There are 157 steps on the staircase and ending up to the gates, which used to open from eight to five, at the beginning of the century, and which were indicated by open hoisted flag, so that the citizens of the city did not climb up unnecessarily when the gates...
