Location||The hotel is located very close to the City Centre square and within easy walking distance of many restaurants, museums and galleries. It is also very close to the Information Bureau where you can get maps and buy local public transport tickets.||These tickets – we got five day ones - are excellent value for money and enable you to get to many places including the Maritime Museum; Open Air Museum and the KUMU museums – all of which are excellent. Also the airport if you are travelling lightly.||There is a good supermarket close with the usual wide range of food and drink. There are further, larger ones within easy walking distance as well.|As others have pointed out, taxies cannot reach the hotel and will drop you about 30 yards away. I managed to find the hotel OK at 1am but imagine it might not be so pleasant if wet. ||Leaving the hotel, my taxi driver came to the hotel and carried the bags uphill to his taxi. Again, not so good if you do not get this help.||Staff||Without exception the staff were very helpful and friendly. I would especially like to thank the young man who carried my bag up to my room – see section below for why!||Room||I had the President Suite (Room #301) with my colleague. This is actually on four levels and would suit an extended family.||There is a small entrance lobby off a room which has the most historic ceiling in Tallinn. You then go up a steep spiral staircase – why I was glad of assistance – to the massive lounge. This has numerous settees, armchairs side tables, etc. ||There was also a small coffee maker. However, not the usual range of teas and coffees I would have expected and no saucers or teaspoons.|There is one bedroom off the lounge which has a desk, refrigerator (no minibar) and a large en suite bathroom with sauna and large stand-alone bath.||From the lounge there is a modern open plan spiral staircase to a landing.|The second main bedroom is off the landing. It is a much bigger room – with an armchair and settee – but no desk or ‘fridge.||Also off the landing is the second bathroom.||Finally, there is a steep – almost ship-like – ladder up to a small third bedroom. This would be ideal for children.||Whilst the bathrooms were modern, the lounge and bedrooms were not. They contained an eclectic selection of furniture which, whist “old and shabby”, was very comfortable. There were no pictures of these rooms - apart from one with a Xmas tree!||Whilst we could use the coffee maker to heat water (for my own supply of teas and coffees) a regular kettle would have been useful. Also, a ‘fridge in the lounge or second bedroom would have saved my colleague having to use mine!||The first bedroom is at the front of the hotel and could, I suspect, be very noisy from the bar opposite. I was “lucky” in that it rained most evenings so there were no people sitting outside to the early hours.||The second bedroom is at the back and, generally, quiet.||Breakfast||Breakfast is served in the basement in what appears to be an old wine cellar. There is a reasonable selection of cold meats cheese, cereals, etc, and you can ask for a cooked breakfast. ||The Full English is excellent and you can have eggs done how you like – I had both poached and scrambled which was fine and my companion had boiled – done to the length of time you like.||You can also make yourself waffles.||A choice of fruit juices and coffee – from a machine – which was also good.||Summary||I am 73 and not that fit but – with the odd rest – I managed to get to and from my room and to breakfast OK despite the absence of a lift. If less mobile than me, this could be a problem as would, also, be the case if you want a bog-standard international hotel.||However, if you want a unique place to stay – and I mean that literally – then, this is the...
Read moreI’m so happy about my stay in Jonathan’s hotel “Merchants house” and can recommend it genuinely to everyone!
The rooms are very clean, tidy, there’s a lot of light coming in and even at nighttime it is so calm that you don’t really hear any other noise. So it is easy to having a good nights sleep.
I can recommend the breakfast! There is a buffet with a wide range of foods (breads, cereals, fruits, nuts & seeds, or you can even make your own waffles! How cool is that?). Everyday Jonathan or the other employees will go to all guests asking them if they would like to have scrambled eggs or anything else. You can even get pancakes if you would like to have them! What I can highly recommend is the self baked Estonian black bread which cannot be compared to German bread at all! It is outstandingly good, tasty and you should definitely try it 😊
I also booked a shoulder-neck-massage there that took place in the hotel but was done by an external masseuse. It was really nice and relaxing - 29€ for 30 minutes was also a fair price.
What I will remember mostly is the kindness and helpfulness of Jonathan and in general the whole hotel personnel! They were more than happy to recommend activities to do or must-sees in the city and even prepared us some food to take with us because our flight was in the middle of the night.
I am utterly happy with my stay there and I can really only recommend this...
Read moreDidn't see the what was on the pictures. Beware if you get ground floor room - they are below courtyard level, so only view you have is one people having at you. In our room - only window was in the door. No central air, but some plastic fan that runs at same speed whatever button you press. Since leaving window open - meant leaving door open - not much freshness. Second - no welcome drink (literally part of the 'package' that you pay for, not even a bottle of water in the room, literally nothing that would be part of 4 star hotel. Also no bath in bathroom, but seems that baths policy is bit off. Towels - one hand towel per person, one bit bigger towel. If you want to wrap dry your hair - bring another towel. And for those coming with a car - NO access with car. Not mentioned anywhere - but if you follow maps - you will end up nowhere. Park far away and walk - albeit 10 minutes it takes to cross whole old town. Good part would be - location is very central if you miss the touristy gimmicks and souvenir laden shopping. The reception seemed to be bit annoyed that we arrived at the end of her shift but still gave us some good directions around town. Beds were also comfy, but since there was no bedside light, nor windows - you either sit in the dark or have to blast main light. So beware - not a bad place but not the glam that the price or website implies. Won't return next...
