The most famous and most photographed spot at Nice is the famous ""English Promenade"" (Promenade des Anglais), named after the British aristocrats who spent their summers in the South of France in previous centuries.

A world-famous, beautiful promenade by the sea with a total length of 7 kilometers is definitely the most touristic spot in Nice. It covers an impressive distance, from the Colline du Château park to the city's airport. Walking as much of the Promenade des Anglais as possible is without a doubt a real must, especially if you are visiting Nice for the first time. Start your walk from the Old Town to the well-known, iconic Hotel Negresco.

The Promenade des Anglais was created around 1820, being a proposal of English aristocrats who spent their winters in Nice, benefiting from the very good climate. Several of the English even financed the project. The Prom (as it is called for short) took its final name in 1860.

It is coastal and two-way, with the two traffic lanes separated from each other by huge palm trees. It has huge sidewalks which almost every hour of the day accommodate people of all ages who either walk by the sea, or enjoy the view from a bench, or play sports. The huge natural beach that develops next to the Promenade des Anglais has shiny pebbles everywhere and no sand anywhere! Other parts of it are free for everyone and others are organized with umbrellas and bars and require entry to sit there.

The signature blue La Chaise Bleue chairs adorn 'The Prom' in a graceful yet highly utilitarian way, accommodating the weary walkers, local and non-local, who, having traveled the endless miles of seafront, want nothing more than only count swimmers and airplane arrivals...
