It's a fantastic place to witness the old shipment canal and its water lock system in action. With frequent passage of boats, there are multiple pedestrian bridges and multiple lock chambers which allow one to easily and conveniently observe the boats being raised and lowered, all without you having to run into or struggle through the crowds of spectators. The banks of Saint-Martin canal are a popular destination for summertime lounging and picnics while watching the boats pass by, so don't forget your wicker and checkered blanket next time you are checking in in the warm time of the year. In the autumn, the colours are offering an additional layer of charm and complexity to the spectacle for you to enjoy.

What a dirty, filthy area. We walked here to kill some time before the open air market opened for lunch and I was shocked to see how disgusting the locals turned this area into. It’s filled with graffiti all over the place and shops boarded up. Trash strewed throughout the streets and it smells like urine. There were homeless people on the benches along the canal and tents just randomly pitched on the sidewalks. We’ve never seen this side of Paris before so it was quite a shock. It’s more of an African/Middle Eastern/Chinese neighborhood and they don’t take care of it like the other neighborhoods we’ve ventured into. I certainly wouldn’t go out of your way to see this canal.

Very nice channel and quite an unique part of Paris. It's worth a visit especially if you have a couple of hours until your train leaves, considering this is a 20 min stroll from Paris Est. The neighbourhood is very nice, with an authentic architecture and many small beautiful streets. There are also boats offering cruises along the channel. Going south the channel you can reach Place de la Bastille and eventually Seine. Fun fact: there is quite an unusual public toilet for men just at the street level.
