Mediocre Museum - not a must, not a waste of time
My first visit to the Museum Frieder Burda happend quite spontanous and in times of the Corona, so with limited expactations and under the influence of social distancing rules in place.
The interesting designed building is an exception of modern architecture within Baden Baden. The current exhibition "The Burda Brothers. A history of collecting" (Die Bilder der Brüder) focuses on the beginning of the art collections of the super-rich kids of the Burda family. The artists are mainly german expressionists. Also the different levels of the museum are colofrul designed. So colors play a big role in the exhibition. Which is fun.
But overall the selection of the pictures, the amount of different artworks and the overall size of the exhibition isn't breathtaking. There is no showstopper, no special moment or situation which invites to forget the time. In an short hour you have checked the whole exhibition and start to spend time in the concept store in the basement - which is just a pricey hodgepodge shop.
On the Baden-Baden Level the museum is for sure a must. But in comparison to other museums in the region, not an absolute to-do.
Also it should be considered that especially the english website version is full of missed translations and bugs which makes it hard to find correct...
Read moreWe visited the 'impossible' themed exhibition. We bought the tickets online and received information of two guided tours at 11 am and 3 pm. Price for the tour were additional 4€ per person. Luckily we went there early enough (30min before start) as they had only limited places and we got the last ones. The exhibition itself was not to interesting. Obviously every piece should present some effect how the observer is tricked. Still the single pieces had no connection and the guide tried hard to make it interesting but sadly failed to highlight or explain the interesting details. Topic on the otherside is also hard with visitors being used to all kind of tricks by social media. With a technical backround I'd say ten year old methods now sold as art. The museum itself is a nice open building on three floors with a shared restaurant. It has no parking lots or signs for direction. Neighbors seem to be used to turning vehicles that notice the lack of parking space only when navigation tells them...
Read moreThe museum is immersed in nature and it has been an amazing setting to discover the work of Nicolas Party, which is pretty much rooted in nature. The synergy with his natural landscapes and the contrast with the apocalypse and the decay of things that is a focal point of the artist has been quite magnificent. I did feel that the exhibition is rather small and restricted for the price of the ticket - although admittedly Nicolas Party created a lot of murals specifically for this museum, and I didn’t love the museum shop. I wish there were items on sale that matched the exhibition and the modern spirit of it, there were classic things on sale that you could find in any store out of this museum. I didn’t have coins with me and I couldn’t leave my jacket in the garderobe for 1 euro. I wish in the future this kind of details will be modernized. All in all a pleasant Sunday experience and I would recommend visiting if you...
