Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden — Attraction in Baden-Baden

I'm an artist myself and I do see the heavy criticism contemporary modern art gets, sometimes unjustified because of ignorance, but this recent exhibition (July 2025) was disappointing to say the least. The art displayed was incredibly stale, unintellectual and not what you'd expect under the title and info material promoting it. "Let your rain fall", an installation that's supposed to be your peaceful moment in the rain and namesake for the exhibition reminds me more of a bathroom disaster. The space is not used well, the biggest rooms remain empty, the "installations" which consisted partially of crochet place mats and imprints of tree bark were just strewn around on the floor. Presentation was mostly rather poor. The entrance and café of the house is almost unbearable. From the café staff I dont even want to begin. The room is very uncomfortable because it doubles as a foyer for the museum, with ticket desk and book sale. Naturally the waiters keep running into people....

Die Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden in Baden-Baden gehört als international renommiertes Ausstellungsinstitut zu den ältesten Kulturinstitutionen der Stadt und der Region.

Seit ihrer Eröffnung im Jahr 1909, als Ausstellungshalle der Freien Künstlervereinigung Baden e.V, ist sie Schaufenster für klassische, moderne und zeitgenössische Kunst. Träger ist heute das Ministerium für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kunst Baden-Württemberg. Seit Mai 2020 stellen Çağla Ilk und Misal Adnan Yıldız – in der Nachfolge von Johan Holten – als Duo die Direktion der Kunsthalle.

Mehrere Ausstellungen pro Jahr sind einzelnen Künstlerpersönlichkeiten und aktuellen wie historischen Fragen von Kunst und Kultur gewidmet. Als Haus ohne eigene Sammlung hat die Staatliche Kunsthalle große Freiheit in der Gestaltung des Programms und kann sehr flexibel auf neue Strömungen reagieren.

So zeigt die Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden noch bis zum 8. Oktober ein experimentelles Ausstellungsformat: „Auditions for An Unwritten Opera“ stellt erstmals in Deutschland das vielschichtige Schaffen des Künstlers Mutlu Çerkez (1964-2005) einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit neu vor.
