My visit to Cologne Zoo in 2014 was an enjoyable and memorable experience that left me impressed with the wide variety of animals and the overall layout of the zoo. It offered a great day out for families and nature enthusiasts, but a few minor improvements could have made it an even better experience.
The diversity of animal species at the zoo was impressive, and I appreciated the efforts made to create natural and spacious enclosures for the animals. It was evident that the zoo's staff cared for the animals' well-being and conservation, which added to the experience.
The highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the elephant enclosure. Watching these majestic creatures up close was a mesmerizing experience and one that I will cherish. Additionally, the tropical rainforest section was a treat, offering a glimpse into the lush habitats of various exotic species.
However, some areas of the zoo seemed slightly outdated and in need of renovation. The signage and information boards were not as informative or interactive as I would have liked, making it harder to fully understand the animals' backgrounds and conservation efforts.
Despite these minor drawbacks, Cologne Zoo is a commendable attraction, providing a fun and educational experience for visitors of all ages. With a bit of modernization and enhanced informational displays, it has the potential to become an even more exceptional destination for wildlife enthusiasts and families seeking a day of...
Read moreThe most tragic zoo, I have ever been to. The zoo is absolutely not maintained, everything looks old and dirty, the grass and bushes are overgrown everywhere. The exhibits look very undermaintained. Most of them look like an overgrown garden at your grandparents. The animals look very thin, like they haven't eaten anything for years and mostly there are only one or two animals in the exhibit (probably they didn't have more money to buy more). Along the paths there are old leaves everywhere (like they would kill them to clean it up). In one exhibit was a dead bird laying in the water and no one cares to get it away (see the images). The glasses are so dirty everywhere, so you cannot really see them. All the aquariums were very dirty, they probably don't clean the water at all (it was full of green plans and you could barely see any fishes). In the exhibits were laying paper boxes and trash and no one was there to tidy it up, they just left it there with animals. The graphics in the whole zoo are so bad and have such bad resolution, like someone downloaded Google preview images and made them bigger. It looks all very unprofessional. And probably the planning was done by some idio*s, because who would place a tape to measure people behind the rocks, so someone can get injured or behind the water pipe? That just shows how bad this zoo is. Absolutely not worth it. I DO NOT...
Read moreThis was one of the best zoos I have been. The enclosure for each species was tailored to their specific needs and actual habitat in the wild. It was also big enough for the animals to have fun. I did not see any individual who depicted a stereotypic behavior, such as pacing, a good indication that the zoo considers their animal welfare. More importantly, the zoo has supported a wide range of conservation programs, to support protection of the associated species in the wild. It is incredible! The zoo sets an example how the institution should be.
My fav is the Asian and South American enclosures. It was my first time to experience such an open enclosures, where the animals were not in cage. The monkeys and birds run naturally above and below us. And visitors were respectful, no a single person tried to touch the animals. Inside was humid and hot, the true weather of the tropical rainforest. They also set up plants unique to the region. I am from Indonesia, and being in the Asian enclosure felt like home despite wearing a winter coat as it was cold outside. Nice and so much fun!
The zoo was also very spacious, so eventhough there were so many people, we did not bump into each other. They provided playground for children and clean bathroom. Unfortunately we went on 24 December, so all the restaurants...
