We recently spent a few days in Dresden and found the famous Brühl's Terrace a nice place to see even during the winter months when the trees which line sections of the terrace bare and devoid of leaves. Brühl's Terrace stretchs along the south side of the Elbe, separating the river from the Historic City Centre. It is an architectural delight with statues, park benches and open space to stroll above the river, all backed by delightful historical buildings. Views of the Elbe and across to the other side of Dresden are very nice - even if less appealing this time of year. Given the relatively small area where most tourists will concentrate their sightseeing time, it is easy and convenient to pass by Brühl's Terrace, during visits to Dresden. You can easily pass by before or after visiting Neumarkt or the Palace. Note: During December the Frauenkirche Xmas market runs along the street which passes below and through the Brühl's Terrace. This is a elevated position for taking nice pictures of the Xmas market below in the direction of Neumarkt.

As a woman who recently visited the Brühl's Terrace, I was utterly enchanted by the stunning views and elegant atmosphere it had to offer. When I looked at the description of this place in Internet, I liked it: A long path along the river bank on a hill above it with very beautiful views of a part of the city on the other side, to the river itself with ships floating on it, and with various beautiful historical architectural buildings on the other side (on the terrace). There are also several cafeterias and one very good restaurant, where my wife and I had dinner. This place is very beautiful and interesting for walking so I highly recommend visiting it just for walking, and if you plan to invite a girl on a date. I don’t know how it was about sunrise, I wasn’t at this time here, but the evening sunset looks good.

Эти 500 метров между мостом Августа и мостом Каролы, на которых расположен Балкон Европы, как ещё называют террасу, являются одной из главнейших достопримечательностей города. Изначально Терраса была построена в качестве части фортификаций города в 16 столетии. Когда набережная Эльбы перестала быть важной частью городских укреплений, сын Августа Сильного - Август II - передал ее в собственность своему премьер-министру графу фон Брюлю. Тот был человеком богатым, амбициозным и большим ценителем прекрасного. Именно его коллекция картин, выкупленная русской императрицей Екатериной Второй, стала основой собрания Эрмитажа в Санкт-Петербурге. На месте мрачных казематов Генрих фон Брюль возвел великолепный дворец, театр, библиотеку, галерею и бельведер, прекрасным видом с которого могли наслаждаться лишь он сам и его знатные гости. В 1814 году князь Николай Репнин-Волконский, являвшийся саксонским генерал-губернатором, отдал приказ сделать эту набережную доступной для посетителей. Для этого со стороны дворцовой площади была сооружена просторная парадная лестница, украшенная львами из песчаника. На рубеже 19-20 столетия Терраса была отремонтирована: изначальные сооружения, построенные по приказу Брюля, были утрачены и заменены современными строениями, которые до сих пор и определяют вид со стороны Эльбы на Старый город: Академия искусств, Секундогенитур и Альбертинум. В 1945 г. во время бомбардировок Дрездена Терраса была почти полностью уничтожена, но в мирное время восстановлена. Сегодня среди других памятников архитектуры здесь расположены здание Верховного Суда Саксонии и Академия Изобразительных Искусств.

Вдоль Эльбы были построены роскошные здания - галереи, библиотека, бельведер, дворец и парк, и терраса стала местом для променада и развлечений короля и саксонской элиты. Например, дворец Секундогенитур был предназначен для принца младшей ветви династии курфюста, тут находилась его библиотека и собрание гравюр (секундогенитур от слова сэконд, в переводе с латыни - «второй по рождению»). В 1813 г. в ходе Наполеоновских войн Дрезден завоевали российские войска и сюда был назначен русский генерал-губернатор князь Репнин-Волконский. Он распорядился сделать набережную доступной для широкой публики, для чего была построена широкая лестница от Дворцовой площади. Старые здания были заменены новыми. Лестницу украсили скульптурной группой "Времена суток" (1871 г.). В свое время Гёте был так восхищен шикарным ансамблем террасы, что назвал ее Балконом Европы. Сейчас на террасе находится фонтан в окружении деревьев, а также бывший Дом земельных сословий, кстати, это первое построенное здесь здание, в нём размещаются Земельное ведомство и государственные учреждения. Двухэтажное здание бежевого цвета - это дворец Секундогенитур, теперь в нем ресторан. Далее идёт дворец Академии изобразительных искусств - большое здание со стеклянным куполом (1894 г.). Его занимают учебные аудитории и мастерские академии, а также выставочный зал. Далее в конце террасы находится живописный сад Брюля с фонтаном, за ним в глубине парка - художественный музей Альбертинум. Перед террасой Брюля проходит набережная. На ней расположен причал для катеров, которые предлагают речные прогулки по Эльбе.
