Carl-Zeiss Planetarium Stuttgart — Attraction in Stuttgart

The planetarium in Stuttgart is the first, modern planetarium with an automatic projector. It currently boasts the highest contrast project manufactured, and is capable of star and video projection - making the presentation a stunning and beautiful event.

The best use of a planetarium is to learn more about the sky, and naturally to also see, view, and experience the sky at times and locations that would otherwise be impossible (especially with kids). For example, I would recommend going to see the northern lights presentation.

Because of the location of the planetarium - it is best suited to take the ubahn and you can get there directly from the main train station, or from the Charlottenplatz transfer station. Don’t expect to drive, as there aren’t any parking places readily available.

After visiting the planetarium, you can walk around the corner and have a snack, beer, and the kids can play at the playground. Just a few more steps away and you can play giant chess, with 1 meter tall...

Deutsch: Achtung! Wir waren mit einem 7 Monate alten Baby dort und mussten tatsächlich 5 € Eintritt (Kinderpreis) zahlen – völlig absurd, da das Baby keinen eigenen Sitzplatz im Kinosaal beansprucht. Es ist der einzige Ort, den ich je erlebt habe, an dem Kinder unter 2 Jahren Eintritt zahlen müssen...

Wenn man ins Kino gehen möchte, gibt es definitiv bessere und günstigere Alternativen. 28 € für eine halbe Stunde Film finde ich stark übertrieben.

Das Einzige, was sich wirklich lohnt, ist die Bildqualität, die durch die Karl-Zeiss-Linse auf die Kuppel des Planetariums projiziert wird – beeindruckend.

Warum also nur eine Sternbewertung? Weil der erste Filmabschnitt so leise war, dass man selbst in der ersten Reihe kaum etwas hören konnte. Und das bei einem Eintrittspreis von 8 € für Erwachsene und 5 € für Kinder – für nur 30 Minuten Videoprojektion.

Zum Vergleich: Das Planetarium in Madrid ist viel größer, der Eintritt kostet dort 3,60 € für Erwachsene, 1,65 € für Kinder und Senioren, und Kinder unter 2 Jahren zahlen nichts...

Aber natürlich – wenn es dir nichts ausmacht, das Geld auszugeben, dann kann ich es dir wirklich empfehlen, denn deine Kinder werden es genießen.

Wenn du Labyrinthe und lange Spaziergänge magst, wirst du zufrieden sein – denn das ist die einzige Möglichkeit: Das Parken im nächstgelegenen Parkplatz kostet 4 € pro Stunde! Und danach musst du einen verschlungenen Weg entlanglaufen, um zum Planetarium zu gelangen (zwischen Baustellen)... Falls du es überhaupt findest!

English: Warning! We went with a 7-month-old baby and were charged a €5 entrance fee (kids) – completely ridiculous, since the baby doesn’t even occupy a seat in the projection room. It’s the only place I’ve ever seen where children under 2 years old have to pay...

If you want to go to the cinema, there are definitely better and cheaper options. €28 for half an hour of film feels extremely overpriced.

The only thing worth it is the image quality projected by the Karl Zeiss lens onto the planetarium’s dome-shaped ceiling – truly impressive.

So why just one star? Because the introductory video had such low volume that you couldn’t hear it even from the front row. And that’s with ticket prices of €8 for adults and €5 for children – for just 30 minutes of video.

For comparison: the Madrid Planetarium is much larger, adult tickets cost €3.60, children and seniors pay €1.65, and kids under 2 enter for free...

But of course – if you don’t mind spending the money, then I do recommend it, because your children will enjoy it.

If you enjoy mazes and walking, you’ll be happy because that’s the only option: Parking in the nearest lot costs €4 per hour! And then you’ll have to walk a winding path to reach the Planetarium (through construction zones)... If you can...

Good show with good graphics! Seats are comfortable enough for a period of 1 hour (duration of the show "Planeten - expeditions ins sonnensystem"). The show was in German (spoken language, no subtitles or other text) but you can get a free headphone which translates it into multiple languages. I'd recommend seats right near the entrance (North side, which can be read at multiple signs in the hall) because of some scenes which are mostly casted on the south side. In short: a very nice show well worth your money. If you visit in de morning it only costs €5. After 12am it costs €8 for this particular show. Other shows are available, check website...
