(Theseus)

Origins

English: Theseus was a legendary king and hero of Athens in Greek mythology. His father is usually considered King Aegeus of Athens, though some traditions claim that Poseidon, god of the sea, was his father. His mother was Aethra, princess of Troezen. Thus, Theseus had both royal lineage and possibly divine parentage.

⸻

Heroic Deeds

(Labors on the way to Athens)

English: On his journey from Troezen to Athens, Theseus chose the perilous land route and defeated six notorious criminals and monsters, including: • Periphetes, the club-bearer • Sinis, the pine-bender • Crommyonian Sow, a giant wild boar • Sciron, who kicked travelers into the sea • Cercyon, a powerful wrestler • Procrustes, the “Stretcher,” who forced travelers onto his iron bed

These labors established him as a protector of travelers and a hero of Athens.

⸻

(Slaying the Minotaur)

English: Every nine years, Athens was forced to send seven boys and seven girls to Crete as tribute, to be devoured by the Minotaur within the Labyrinth. Theseus volunteered to go. With the help of Minos’ daughter Ariadne, who gave him a ball of thread to trace his path, he slew the Minotaur and freed Athens from this burden.

⸻

(Theseus and Ariadne)

English: Theseus escaped Crete with Ariadne, but abandoned her on the island of Naxos. She was later taken as wife by the god Dionysus.

⸻

(Tragedy and Kingship)

English: Theseus had promised his father Aegeus to change the ship’s black sails to white if successful. But he forgot. Seeing the black sails, Aegeus believed his son was dead and threw himself into the sea, which was thereafter called the Aegean Sea. Theseus then became king of Athens.

⸻

(Reformer of Athens)

English: As king, Theseus unified the scattered communities of Attica under Athens, laying the foundation of Athenian political identity and democracy. He was also a companion of other heroes, including Heracles.

⸻

(Other Adventures)

English: • United with the Amazon queen Antiope (or Hippolyta), fathering Hippolytus. • Took part in the Argonauts’ expedition. • Became close friends with Pirithous; together they attempted to abduct Persephone from the Underworld, but failed. Theseus was trapped in Hades until rescued...

The Theseus statue, a remarkable piece, was created by Georgios Vitalis. He was a great Greek sculptor born in 1838 in Ysternia, Tinos Island, and passed away in 1901 in Alexandria, Egypt. This statue is a fine example of 19th-century Greek classic art.
