Small but nice decorated Greek Orthodox church, in the near of the entrance to the Ancient Agora and Temple of Hephaestus. Philip, who initially belonged to the circle of disciples around John the Baptist, was - like the brothers Andrew and Peter - called by Jesus to be disciples, he then introduced Nathanael as a further disciple into the circle around Jesus (John's Gospel 1: 43 - 49). Before feeding the five thousand, Jesus put him to the test (John 6:5-7). Greeks who wanted to see Jesus turned to Philip (John 12:21-22). He took part in the Lord's Supper in Jerusalem and was reprimanded by Jesus because he obviously still hadn't understood his mission (Gospel of John 14:8-9). Along with Andrew, Philip was the only disciple of Jesus with a Greek name. According to legend, Philip preached in Scythia for 20 years; Its capital was then in today's Simferopol, called Neapolis in Roman times. When Philip was about to sacrifice in front of the statue of Mars, a mighty dragon came and killed the priest's son and two tribunes, his poisonous breath sickening everyone else present. Philip caused the dragon to go into the wilderness, raised the dead, healed the sick, overthrew idols, and converted all. According to the testimony of Eusebius of Caesarea, Philip lived with three daughters who lived as virgins in Hierapolis - today ruins near Pamukkale - and died there together with the two daughters Mariamne and Philippa, the third is buried in Ephesus - today ruins near Selçuk . According to this, Papias of Hierapolis reported miracles performed by the daughters in the city. Anders tells Clemens of Alexandria that the daughters were married. The tradition about the daughters is probably based on a mixture with Philip the Evangelist, whose daughters are mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles (21, 8f). Philip is said to have died on the cross. According to local tradition, Philip spent the last two years of his life in Athens after Paul apparently failed to found a church there and died there as a martyr, which is why the church of Filippos Vlassarous in the old town near the Stoa of the Greek Agora is dedicated to him; it stands on the site of a church destroyed by the Turks in 1826/1827, which was then rebuilt and...
