Panagia Paraportiani is a famous Greek Orthodox church located in the town of Mykonos, Greece. It is considered one of the most iconic and photographed churches in the country and is a popular tourist attraction. The name "Panagia Paraportiani" translates to "Our Lady of the Side Gate" in Greek, and it is derived from its location next to the entrance of the medieval castle walls of Mykonos. The church is actually a complex of several chapels that were gradually built over a span of centuries, resulting in its unique and asymmetrical architectural design. The construction of Panagia Paraportiani began in the 14th century and continued for several centuries, with each chapel being added by different builders at different times. The church incorporates elements of various architectural styles, including Byzantine, Venetian, and local Cycladic influences. Its distinct whitewashed exterior stands out against the traditional blue-domed churches that are commonly associated with Greece. Panagia Paraportiani is composed of five small chapels built one on top of the other, with four of them forming the base and the fifth one crowning the structure. The lower chapels are dedicated to Saints Anargyroi, St. Eustathios, and St. Sozon, while the upper chapel, which is the most recognizable part of the church, is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The upper chapel features a beautiful dome and a bell tower, creating a striking silhouette against the backdrop of the Aegean Sea. Inside the church, visitors can admire religious icons, intricate woodwork, and other ornate decorations. The interior exudes a serene and peaceful atmosphere, inviting visitors to pause and reflect. Panagia Paraportiani has become an iconic symbol of Mykonos and is often depicted in postcards, photographs, and artwork. Its unique architectural style and picturesque location make it a must-visit attraction for tourists from all over the world.

Panagia Paraportiani in the Town of Mykonos, north of the Castle of Mykonos, is one of the most photographed churches in the world. It consists of a complex of five churches, where four (Agios Efstathios, Agioi Anargyri, Agios Sozon, Agia Anastasia) are the base of the building and a fifth that rests like a dome. The church owes its name to the fact that it is located near the small gate, the ""paraporti"" of the wall of the medieval castle of Mykonos. The picturesque church combines beauty with rich historical heritage. Its construction began in the middle of the 15th century. The white walls of the church, white being the characteristic color of Mykonos, come in a particularly interesting contrast with the intense blue of the sky and the sea, making it one of the most favorite places for pictures.

Absolutely lovely church especially around sunset. I read this is one of the most photographed churches not only in Mykonos but the world! Is along the seafront just near the Kastro neighbouhood. It is a church that consists of 5 smaller churches built on top and next to each other over a long period of time. The church of Agios Efstathios is the center of this complex, surrounded by the churches of Agios Anargyros, Agios Sozon, and Agia Anastasia. On top of these four churches, there is the church of the Virgin Mary, which looks like a dome. Such a beautiful church and area at sunset, and a fair number of people around as a result, but still very worth while seeing.

Our day trip to Mykonos during our Mediterranean cruise a few years ago continues to stand out in our family's memories. We enjoyed hanging out and swimming in the waters of Psarou beach. The sunbeds were relatively cheap compared to the others nearby. The food at the canteen-style restaurant Be Cool was just what we craved. This beach was perfect for a family with children. Not like the party beaches a few miles away. Walking through the town was quite pleasant, albeit hot as it was the middle of summer. The Windmills of Mykonos were lovely. Will definitely come back and explore more of Mykonos on our next Greek isles adventure.

This Church complex is set between the Old port and Little Venice when walking this way along the sea (you'll miss it if you take the shortcut through the winding alleys inland). Paraportiani Church complex consists of 5 churches built one above other or next to another in a small area by the sea. It dates back to the 14th century and was consequently enlarged. Throughout the complex are interesting plaques explaining the history and photos of 20 c Mykonos when it was a normal ordinary village, not a jet set place, which I found very interesting
