A masterful addition to the defenses of the already heavily fortified town of Nafplion, the fortress of Bourtzi is also a place of beauty. The latter is somewhat of a paradox, as not too long ago, the islet was the home of the local executioners. Built by the Venetians in phases, beginning in the 15th century and with some additions in the 17th, it displays the characteristics of the transitional period from medieval fortifications to post-gunpowder forts. Massively thick walls (up to 8m in some parts) are designed to withstand cannon fire and to support cannon firing in return. Gunholes and high walls discourage those contemplating a possible land attack, rendering it nigh suicidal on such a small landing zone so heavily defended. This being its history, it now can offer a wonderful and short boat cruise, an interesting journey into the past, and a majestic view to all directions. Either on romantic or a family trip, it is a great and...

A Magical Little Escape! Visiting Bourtzi Fortress in Nafplio was such a fun and peaceful experience! 🌊⛵️ The boat ride over was quick and beautiful, with stunning views of the town and sea. Once you arrive, it feels like stepping into another world — quiet, breezy, and full of history. The staff there were incredibly kind and welcoming, making the whole visit even more enjoyable. They really care about the place and were happy to answer questions or just let you explore at your own pace.

But okay… the highlight? THE CAT. 🐱 Yes, there’s this biggie cutie cat that totally owns the place like a royal guardian. Super friendly, photogenic, and clearly used to being adored by visitors. Don't miss out on giving it some love.

Totally worth the visit. Peaceful vibes, cool history, and an unexpected feline...

7 euro boat ride, 7 euro entrance to the fortress. A place with a rich history, an exceptionally beautifully renovated fortress. The view is unreal. Recommendation

The venetian castle of Bourtzi is a fortification located in the middle of Nafplio’s harbour, there are boats departing from Nafplio’s port, but unfortunately until September 2022, which was the period I visit it, the castle was in remodelling works so that is not open for visits, but you can take the boats to navigate around it. The boat ride worth it whether you want to take some pictures, sunset and sunrise are the best times to get some great shots or if you are owner of a drone, you can fly around, just do not forget to comply with the fly regulations and bring your license with you. If you are planning to swim to the castle let me remind you that is forbidden due to security reasons and no one is allowed at the castle.
