You can do this trek from Kamari or Perissa village. We did it from Perissa village. You do not need any guided tour to do this trek. Firstly because the routes are well marked, secondly because the starting point is well connected with driving route as well as bus route. We started at 11.30 and returned to the bottom by 2.30 . This included ascent, descent, exploring , photo points, rest stops . Try to go early is what i read on all reviews which is true but weather dependent. The day ( 16,05.2023 ) when we went it was super windy in the morning and the weather forecast was high wind in the morning and low wind , cloudy in mid morning onwards till 3.00 and sunny after that. Too much sun can be fatal for this hike as there are no trees or shades . We started at 11.30 and was just perfect weather , inspite of low winds the winds on the top were crazy strong and chilled too inspite of being afternoon. So do carry a scarf to cover your chest and neck or a windcheater. The hike needs moderate fitness but good shoes as some parts are sandy and stony and easy to slip, many were slipping, i saw. As you reach the Ancient thera entrance which is half way of the hike, you can enjoy extra ordinary view of aegean sea and city. Only one small shop i saw selling snack , cold drinks etc so do carry your picnic atleast a sandwich, fruits and water bottles as you can easily get hungry and surely thirsty. Upto this point, you can reach by car or private bus tours. But after that you must hike. We were on foot all throughout and it was ok not very tiring. The descent on foot is bit exhaustive as its slippery and you must pay attention so enjoy the views while ascending the top. The ticket of 6 euros is worth the entry and the site. Excellent view of kamari , caldera, perissa, sea and horizons . The ancient city ruins are interesting to watch too. but even though it dont interest you the trail through the old ruins of the city is enchanting and unbeatable views makes it worth the effort. No toilettes by the way all through the trek. A trek you will not regret adding into your itinerary! Much enjoyable than i imagined. Alert : Winds are strong , dont do much stunts on the borderlines of the trails leaning on the cliff...

If you’re staying anywhere near Kamari, you have to check out Ancient Thera — it’s the perfect little adventure that makes you feel cultured and athletic before lunch 💪📜

We decided to hike up to the ruins, and while I’m definitely not a pro hiker (like... not even close), I managed to crawl my way up there pretty easily. It’s a winding path that zigzags up like a snake, and there are benches along the way if you need a little breather. Bring good shoes and lots of water — but no need to panic, it’s not Everest.

You can apparently go up by car or quad, even though there’s a giant sign saying you’re not supposed to 🤷‍♀️ The road looks like it’s one-way and possibly restricted, but we definitely saw vehicles parked up there, so… your guess is as good as mine. We walked it to save money, and honestly, it was worth it for the views and the smug sense of accomplishment. 🏆

At the top, entrance is €10 per adult, BUT — if you’re a student under 25, it’s free. So my boyfriend got in without paying, and I had to cough up the full amount (rude), but if you do the girl math, we basically paid €5 each, which is a steal 🧠✨

Inside, you’ll find plenty of info signs, maps, reconstructions, and cool little facts about what the city looked like way back when. The ruins are super spread out, and it’s fascinating to imagine people living up there with that view 😍

Oh, and speaking of the view — it’s STUNNING. Totally worth the burnt calves and the 85 flights of stairs my phone claimed I climbed. (I consider that my workout for the month.)

💨 Pro tip: it was super windy when we went, so maybe don’t wear a cap forward unless you want it flying off every five seconds. I went full frat boy with it backwards and honestly? It’s a look.

🌞 Also — don’t be fooled by the breeze. WEAR SUNSCREEN, girlies. I got a lil’ toasted because I felt all cool in the wind, but the UV said “surprise!”

If you're someone who doesn’t want to just lay on the beach all day, this is 100% for you. You get views, history, a light cardio session, and a good story to tell later. Definitely recommending this one — get up early, bring water, slap on that SPF, and go...

This is a wonderful step back in time with some of the most fabulous views on Santorini. It's well worth the trip for the views alone. There are some sign posts around the site detailing parts of the ruins but I would suggest that anyone wanting in depth archeological information to do some independent research. You can walk up the mountain but I would suggest driving or paying to be taken up from Kamari as once up there the walk up into and around the site is not easy. There are a good number of steps and the ground is particularly uneven so those with mobility problems should not attempt this. Anyone who has weak ankles or feet should definitely wear walking shoes or at least something with support. The road up the mountain is not very wide and can be frightening for those who are not used to driving close to the edge but the local drivers are very adept at this and do this several times a day everyday. The site is open from about 8:30am but closes at 2:30pm although the mountain can be ascended at any time. There is an entrance fee but there is also a reduction for students and seniors but only from certain countries and this is not advertised very well so be sure to ask if you are eligible. The only refreshment stand is prior to entering the site so if going on a very hot day I would recommend purchasing some water. There is very little shade and it can get very hot so be prepared. There are some seating areas around the site but only a couple of these have shade so bear this in mind if you are...

What a fascinating place! My hand brushed against the warm stone as I steadied myself. My sandals slipped slightly on the uneven path. We’d just stepped out of the ATV, taking it all in with wide eyes. The air was dry and still, and the only sound was the soft clink of loose gravel underfoot. Ancient Thera doesn’t announce itself. There’s no grand entryway or polished signs. Just timeworn ruins, sun-bleached stone, and a view so vast it feels almost impossible. The Aegean stretched out in front of us, deep blue and utterly still. What surprised me most was the detail. The thoughtfulness of the ancient design. I found myself standing over what was once a working plumbing system, completely intact after thousands of years. I could sense the brilliance in it, how advanced and elegant this civilization must have been. I never really connected with history in school. But this was different. Here, history isn’t something you study. It’s something you feel in your body, in your breath. You climb over it, touch it, walk through it. You notice the curve of a stone step, the quiet rhythm of the wind, the way light bounces off dusty walls. We’ll hike up next time. It’s steep, but something about the journey feels meaningful, more like a pilgrimage than a walk. Ancient Thera isn’t curated or overly explained, and that’s what makes it unforgettable. It’s raw, elemental, and deeply peaceful.
