Palacio de los Capitanes Generales [Captains General Palace] is a large building located on the Central Square of Antigua. Today it serves as the headquarters of the Guatemala Institute of Tourism, the Antigua Tourism Association, National Police, and the Sacatepéquez Department government. It also houses the National Museum of Guatemalan Art. Constructed in 1558, it was built with a wooden floor and arches that supported the whole structure. The General Captaincy of Guatemala was governed from this building, and inside it were all the government, administrative and military offices. It was a luxurious life for the Captains General for themselves, their families, and their friends. The building also lodged the Royal Tax office, jail, Army headquarters, horse facilities and warehouses. After four major earthquakes, this building was heavily damaged, with the last quake in 1976. Part of it was demolished and some of it remains in ruins. The palace along with all of Antigua was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1979.
