While it's a 5 star experience, the waitress we had, the older woman, was not a good waitress and made it a 4 star one, but we'll still rate it 5, imagining that she wasn't present.
The waitress kept rushing us, making comments as if we need to hurry, and she had only been with us for a few seconds! We sat down with the menus, then she returned 2 minutes later and wanted us to choose something. Our questions bothered her a little bit as we tried to understand the menu, and then said she'll be back. Okay, great. She returned 3 minutes later with this comment "and now you're ready or not?" - Jeez.. Way to sour the mood. Wife and I hadn't been out in a while alone without the kids and we get a grumpy, impatient waitress. And, it was our anniversary. Come to think of it, lots of older waitresses in Guatemala behave like that, and keep looking elsewhere like they need to go somewhere and attend others.
Then, at the end when we're paying with the machine, she makes another impatient comment. If she doesn't like her job, let her quit.
Apart from that experience, the food was superb. I ordered the lamb stew (estofado de cordero), 125 GTQ, and it was spectacular. Sauce, flavor, lamb, all delicious. Funny enough, I asked the waitress if she recommended that dish and she said not so much because she doesn't like the flavor of lamb. I thought it was going to be bad but good thing I did not listen to her. The lamb flavor is exactly as it should be.
This happens often in Guatemala by the way, people have a different taste here and don't always know what is tasty since they eat simple foods packed with carbs and are used to low quality ingredients. I keep getting recommended something and it turns out bad, so whenever a waiter/waitress recommends or doesn't recommend, do the opposite lol.
My wife, who is Guatemalan, took the gallo en chicha de frutas (plato del dia), 90 GTQ, and again the lady impatiently answered her when my wife wondered if it had the same ingredients as another similar meal but yet didn't note them down in the ingredient list (she wanted the other first). The answer was supposedly yes, they both have the same even if one of them doesn't note them down (didn't taste like it did though) but the lady kept saying "yes yes, it does, yes don't worry" and we only asked it twice just to confirm. If only I could tell you the number of times we have received misinformation in Guatemala. We had to confirm.. Who knows if it was true. Didn't taste like it. Either way, wife loved the meal.
Tortillas weren't the best, unfortunately. They should improve that, considering the quality of the restaurant. But, the corn-based side dish, tamalito de chipilin, that accompanied the main dish was great. It had black beans and I think some cocoa paste. I'm not usually a fan of those but this one yes. My wife had the tamalito de chipilin but with sweet pepper. Didn't taste as good as mine :D.
Horchata drink was the best we've had.
Music was good and its volume was at the correct level compared to nearly all restaurants in the country who love to blast music and make us deaf.
It's a nice place though, peaceful, and well maintained.
Recommended, just as long as you don't get the impatient older waitress (ask for...
Read moreFirst of all I have to say that I'm Guatemala, then I can say with authority that this is THE WORST GUATEMALAN FOOD THAT I EVER TRIED. The prices were extremely high and the quality of the food is like if a little kid that is learning to cook made it. It is incredible how the Chef here got his title. The prices and the quality does not match at all and should be unacceptable, the real guatemalan dishes, well done, do not taste (not even close) as bad as they served them here. Don't waste your time and your money eating here, I would rather eat first with the people that sell food on the street than here. Really sad because i had a full group of foreigners that wanted to tried our local food and ended up just disappointed. This was the first time ever that I set up a complain with the local entity because of the bad quality of the food (that is how...
Read moreWe were short on time and didn’t feel like checking more Google reviews but sadly that was our mistake. We ended up coming to this restaurant and while the wait staff were very nice - other low reviews were 100% right - they’re literally microwaving food in front of us. The rest was laid out in a buffet of silver serving trays for the kitchen to serve into plates.
We ordered grilled chicken and it came out cold and looked old. We told Them and they threw it on the grill and put the rice back in the pot while getting new rice out.
We saw the waiters dumping plastic bags of tortilla chips into a ceramic jar (as if they were actually fresh) and then grabbing them with bare hands.
Not at all worth the prices they charge especially with so many amazing restaurants around for less or comparable. Our strawberry mojitos were good and our...
