Stepping into Hotel Posada de Don Rodrigo was like taking a journey back to the early days of the Spanish colonial city in Guatemala. The doors, ceilings, courtyard, floors, and decor capture that time to make staying at the hotel like living in a museum. ||The hotel is lovingly restored and maintained. My favorite room was the restaurant with a spectacular intricate carved wood ceiling painted green and other colors. There's a wonderful old fountain on one wall. In the mornings and evenings, a band plays Spanish music. At night, dancers in costumes perform as well. The room, performers and excellent food and drinks make a visit to the restaurant a don't miss event. When we came back to Antigua a second time before our flight out, we decided to go back to the restaurant for dinner again because we loved it so much. We especially enjoyed the beef tenderloin and sangria. ||The courtyard is lush and green, with a series of colorful paintings set on easels capturing various sites, and flora and fauna of Guatemala. Flowering plants and the chirping of birds add to the ambiance making for a romantic and charming setting. ||The rooms line the courtyard with eclectic sitting areas with furniture consistent with the colonial era. There are large pottery urns sprinkled throughout providing water for drinking. ||The contrast between the hectic street right outside of the hotel, smack in the middle of all of the action, and the serene open hallways and courtyard is striking. ||We were a bit disappointed our room was very small with just a standard double bed. My husband is 6 foot 6 and it was snug. The only window was a hinged opening in the heavy dark wood antique door out to the courtyard. There was no safe in the room which concerned us because we didn't want to carry all of our cash with us. ||We ended up hiding money in the room. I suspect we didn't need to work so hard to hide it because when we left money out to tip the people who made up our room, they didn't take it. This happened in other hotels in Guatemala as well. There's security at the front door and the staff members were all warm, friendly, eager to assist, and competent. ||We didn't expect air-conditioning, and there wasn't any. During the day, the room did get a bit warm and stuffy, but by evening, it cooled off enough to be comfortable. ||Despite the hotel's age, it was spotless and well-maintained. We ended up staying in three different hotels in Antigua during our trip. This one was my favorite, despite the small room, because the attention to every detail was so thorough. It is an unforgettable place and among the highlights...
Read moreThe place is old and in mint condition. From my understanding the place is 300 years old or at least parts of it is. Cons no AC in the rooms, wifi is weak which was expected the structure is made of brick, plaster. Any room that has a street view on a Saturday night you won’t fall asleep until 12:30am because it’s a town full of Tourist looking to get drunk at bars or nightclubs the hotel is on a busy street half a block away from the arch, I’ve been here before and things don’t die down until 12:30am-1am
Pros: old style furniture, decor and staff is on point with everything. My family of eight were treated like superstars! I called the front desk at 620am for a warm glass of milk for my daughter and they came running. It was done under a minute.
They have free parking if your a guest. When I first pulled up I asked one of the employees where could I find parking I was surprised for him to say that they own the parking across the street and it’s free if your staying at the hotel. He asked for my name and said I’ll be back with an update if your rooms are ready. It was an hour before check in and two of the three rooms were ready.
To my surprise he showed up with two others to carry all our personal belongings. Check in through Expedia was a breeze everything was paid for all I had to do was sign two papers.
The keys to the room now that’s an adventure! They are old giant steel keys at first it’s impossible to use but by bedtime we were pros. Some people complained that it should be cards or something modern👎your in Antigua it’s an old place, if it’s not your thing don’t even bother going there.
Food and entertainment at the restaurant. Everything was great! The portions are big and the menu has many things to try. Is it expensive? Yes! But then again it’s Antigua everything is expensive! If your traveling on a budget don’t even bother showing up go somewhere else. The music with the marimba and the Moros dancing was 👍
At 2am we did wake up to the sound another guest possibly drunk trying to force open our door with the steel key I asked who it was..no answer. I called the desk they answered on the first ring I told them was going on they immediately showed up outside of our room and led the guest to the right room called me back within a minute apologizing for the...
