History: The name "Hauz Khas" is derived from Persian, where 'Hauz' means "water tank" and 'Khas' denotes "royal," translating to "Royal Tank." This reservoir was originally constructed by Alauddin Khilji during his reign from 1296 to 1316 to supply water to the inhabitants of Siri, the second city of Delhi. Later, during Firuz Shah Tughlaq's rule (1351–1388), the tank was desilted, and several significant structures were added around it, including a madrasa (Islamic seminary), a mosque, and Firuz Shah's own tomb. These additions transformed the area into a prominent center for Islamic education and architecture. ​

Hauzkhas complex is a historical site which has monuments built between 13th &14th century during the reign of Tuglaq dynasty. Best part is that there is no entry fees and is easily accessible to all since it is in the heart of south delhi at Hauzkhas village. Oarking is not a challenge as one can easily park at the park8bg of Hauzkhas village and just walk up to the complex .Best to visit as per ne is early morning or just before sunset as the view of the palace especially the red sandstone appears golden with the sunlight and the rays just passes in between the pillars of the monument makes it look amazing.There are several structures inside .just at the entrance to the left is Three domed building which is in T shape if viewed from the top .The structure has several pillars and the symmetrical arrangement makes It look like a perfect art and engineering marvel. Originally Allauddin khilji got a tank built here for the citizens and it was later excavated by Tuglaq .The lake pose a great view and is a major tourist destination amongst travellers and locals for morning and evening walk. The complex also has an Old Mosque and the Tomb of Feroz shah which was built 8n 1350 AD. Then we have the Tombs of Tuglaq period. Overall it's a nice place to be since it takes you away from the hustle bustle of Delhi and it's traffic and pollution and very close to the nature . during whole day one can hear the sweet sound of parrots, cuckoo and other chirping birds.Great place for photography and for art lovers. We visited Hauz Khas Complex in New Delhi in December 2024. It indeed serves as a wonderful reminder of Delhi’s rich history.

The complex traces its origins to the 13th century during the reign of Alauddin Khilji. The term ‘Hauz Khas’ translates to ‘Royal Tank’ in Persian, referring to the large water reservoir built to supply water to the city of Siri. Later, Firoz Shah Tughlaq restored the tank and added significant structures, including a madrasa (Islamic seminary), mosque, and his own tomb .

You can easily spend more than half a day exploring the different structures, and some areas make great spots for photos. The history is evident here in the madrasa and Firoz Shah’s tomb.

The serene Hauz Khas lake serves as a wonderful accompaniment to the complex. The complex is open everyday from 10:30am to 7pm.
