Read moreUltimate place to enjoy sunrise - but it takes effort getting to the top. I won't recommend it to people with joint paints or breathing related disorders, as the climb does get steep and difficult.
For the rest, read on: You do not need a guide to be there, as all you need to do is wake up early and reach the Virupaksha Temple parking at least half an hour before sunrise. Ideally, keep a buffer of 15-30 minutes, depending upon your speed up the hill. We went in mid February, when the sunrise was expected around 6:50 am. Having reached the place by 6:30, we were unsure of making it in time but we took the challenge nevertheless. Unless you're climbing up blindfolded, you won't miss the arrows to keep you on the right track.
Please carry a water bottle to save time and maintain your pace. There's a stretch after 15 mins of climb, where people start having second thoughts about continuing the climb. There are 7-8 poorly carved steps on a rock with nothing to cling on to for support. Once you cross that, rest of the climb is fairly easy.
Unlike other "sunrise points" around the country where you struggle to find proper space to get a decent view, you have plenty of it on top of Matanga Hill. The view is a nature lover's delight and makes the effort worthwhile.
If you have time, climb down and explore the river bank. Kodandarama Temple and surrounding areas. Plenty of art work and remains from centuries ago to send your imaginations wild.
