Extra Info Locally known as Yeduru Basavanna or Nandi, this monolithic bull marks the east end of the Virupaksha Bazaar. The statue is housed in a twin storied pavilion built on an elevated platform. A heap of gigantic boulders behind the pavilion offers an interesting backdrop. Though partially mutilated and carved in a coarse style, this Nandi attracts visitor owing to its giant size. Monolithic Bull pavilion Nandi is the mount of lord Shiva and it's symbolic that this one faces the Shiva shrine (Virupaksha Temple) located at the opposite end of the street, about a kilometer from it. The Nandi statue sits peacefully, facing the Virupaksha Temple, symbolizing loyalty and divine presence. Though the area around it is often filled with tourists and pilgrims, it still manages to maintain a tranquil aura. The craftsmanship is impressive—despite centuries of weathering, the intricate detailing on the body, especially the ornaments, is still visible and admirable.
Surrounding the statue, you’ll find a calm, open space with a backdrop of rocky boulders and scattered ruins that give you a feel of Hampi’s historic grandeur. It’s also a good spot to take a short break from all the walking while soaking in the view of the temple in the distance.
