My 8 year old son and I visited this museum while we were on a tour that stopped in Kilkenny. Our tour only allowed for 2 hours in Kilkenny so this was the perfect spot to visit. It’s not terribly large but was extremely interesting and well done. They also had a Lego scavenger hunt in which they gave clues based on the historic items presented in the museum. This made the museum super fun for my son (and myself to be honest). He learned a lot but in a way that’s appropriate and interesting to a child. They also had an audio device they gave my son that he could point at various spots to hear about what was being shown in that section of the museum. Again making it easier for him than having to read through all of the historical information. If you have kids definitely stop here if you’re in Kilkenny.

We spent 90 minutes at St. Mary’s Medieval Mile Museum and it was one of the most enjoyable activities during our stay in Kilkenny. Our tour guide Pat, gave us a highly entertaining and informative historical overview of the founding of the city of Kilkenny. I especially liked learning about the complex relationship between the Catholic Church and it’s control of the areas outside the city walls versus the town council which controlled what took place within the city walls. If you are in Kilkenny, don’t miss this jewel tucked away behind High Street.

Pat's guided tour was an amazing way to explore the museum. He provided a coherent, amusing, and memorable history of Kilkenny and the city's relation to the rest of Irish and English history. The history and architecture of the building alone is worth a visit in itself- the modernisation and conversion from church to museum (with a few steps in between), was done in a way to show off much of the buildings history. The museum houses a wonderful range of artifacts as well, and don't miss the medieval graveyard surrounding the museum.

Loved the tour with our tour guide Patrick! This museum has only been open for about 2 years, and is very well done with a mix of ancient stone tombs and interactive media. There’s a fun LEGO people scavenger hunt for the kids and a stone sarcophagus type thing you can climb into. Pat has a mesmerizing storytelling ability with some witty comments littered throughout the history. You get to see old maps, tombstones, artifacts found on the site, and hear all about how Kilkenny was founded and thrived. Tour took about an hour.

Let's start here, this was one of my favorite parts of my trip to Ireland. When you read the title, it seems like it might be another museum full of old "artifacts" and semi-interesting factoids. No no. This is anything but. Part museum/part archaelogical site/part grave yard, the museum takes such care in restoring a church used for nearly 800 years and installing interactive guides and truly stunning exhibits. You will not be disappointed. After going through I wanted to work there. Do not skip this!

St. Mary's Medieval Mile Museum has a great historical narrative of the Middle Ages in Kilkenny. The staff at the museum were really friendly and gave a great introduction to the museum and a little of the history of the area covered. The historical grave stones were very interesting and the view from the second floor over the town was nice. Also an audio tour goes along with the displays which was a great narrative of what you were seeing. Def worth a visit.
