Just off the main square, this place houses priceless masterpieces of the Umbrian School of painting, ranging from the 13th to the 19th century, including the masters Pisano brothers, Duccio, Gentile da Fabriano and Piero della Francesca as well as Umbrian masters Fiorenzo di Lorenzo, Perugino, Pintoricchio and more. You would need at least three days to skim through the whole exhibition on 2 floors. Not to be missed.

Where most national galleries in other countries often fail is to put everything out on display. Thus the visitor leaves with that sinking feeling most usually associated with a heavy, indigestible, infernally long, badly cooked meal. Italians know about food; and they know a lot about art. And they also know even more about how to create an experience.

The design of this outstanding space is the absolute winner here, supporting, through its understated excellence, the message of the imagery on the walls. Light and airy rooms and views across tiled rooftops remind you of what you're looking at: sacred art. How can you then not be touched by the sunken eyes of Christ hanging on a cross resplendent in gold? Or Saint Catherine's fine features softened through living selflessly? The sinuous curves on a symbolic carved shepherd's crook?

Almost everything has been restored to its original pristine condition, which you may, or may not, like as a concept. It allows you, the viewer, to see it as it was probably originally intended, with an attitude of devotion of its original commissioners. Take a long breath and look, look deeply into those eyes, absorb the connection, and then leave with it embedded...
