My wife and I used this station this past Sunday, as I had read it is closest to the Leaning Tower. It was a bit confusing as to where we should walk once off the train. Anyway, we returned a few hours later for our trip back. I agree it is a somewhat eerie place. I expected more people would have used this station due to its convenient location. After dark it was indeed a ghost town, and I felt a bit uneasy, except that outside the station itself were about 3-4 police officers. They were kind of milling around over there, but we felt much safer. I had to read the board to realize we needed to catch the train on the next platform, which required going downstairs in the elevator and walking through that subway-ish tunnel. It wasn't a long walk by any stretch, as it was only one platform over. However, I'm glad we arrived a bit early, as it did take a few moments to figure out where were and where we needed to be. Sad to hear about some pickpocket incidents here. Of course, my review is based on our isolated experience. That said, based on other reviews, if we ever return to Italy for another vacation (this was our first time in the country), and we decide to see Pisa again I'd probably opt for the...
Read moreMy friend and I got pickpocketed in the short 10min we were at the station. Within minutes of getting off our train from La Spezia to change to the train heading for Florence, a gypsy told us the elevator wasn’t working so we had to carry our luggages up and down the stairs, only to get pickpocketed by the group of 3 ladies while on the staircase (some people mentioned in earlier reviews?). Two of them walked in front to distract while the other one walked behind. A gypsy lady deliberately opened her umbrella to cut me off from my friend so that we could both be pickpocketed at the same time. In the middle of the day the platform is pretty empty and there’s no security so be careful. Even after the incident happened there were other gypsies waiting around for targets.
Edit: I have yet to go to a station as dodgy as this one. If I could give 0...
Read moreTourists using this station beware - getting here requires navigation of a maze which could only have been conjured up by King Minos himself. We were only able to find it after asking 4 different locals for directions (many of them do not even seem to know of this station’s existence!). If you are coming from the direction of the leaning tower you will need to go down the underpass and go up the second flight of stairs you see, then sight the station on the right and hustle through the side streets to get there. We barely made our train and only because it was 5 minutes delayed, and had to sprint across railway tracks to do so. Would suggest taking any return trip from Pisa Centrale or mapping your way to the station far in advance in excruciating detail, and allowing at least 25 minutes to find this place if you are leaving...
