Tempio di Giuturna (cd "Tempio A") — Attraction in Rome

This is one of the four ancient temple ruins which can be seen within the Area Sacra di Largo Argentina. It is Temple (A) on the information panel found on the east side of the Sacred Area, the most northern of the four.

The Temple of Juturna is believed to have been built by Gaius Lutatius Catulus after his victory over the Carthaginians in 241 BC. What you can see is the fountain as well as standing column fragments.

There is also an apse in the back, evidence of Christian churches which were built upon the ancient temple grounds between 8th and 14th centuries AD.

It is an interesting ruin to locate and view while sightseeing...

Si lo ribadisco, si tratta di un angolo della piazza molto bello che merita maggiore approfondimento. Iuturna o Giuturna era una ninfa che proteggeva le acque e non molto lontano, nel Foro romano vicino al Tempio di Vesta, si trovano i resti del Lacus Iuturnae, che raccoglieva le acque di una sorgente palatina. Ma nell'antica Roma Giuturna aveva anche un tempio a lei consacrato, che probabilmente è da identificare con il cd tempio A dell'area sacra di Largo di Torre Argentina, fatto edificare nel 241 a.C. da Gaio Lutazio Catulo per la vittoria conseguita su Cartagine nella Battaglia delle Isole Egadi. Lo potete ammirare nell'area che si trova sul lato di corso Vittorio e lo riconoscete perché sopra questo tempio ne venne costruito un altro che lo inglobò e successivamente venne costruita la chiesa di San Nicola dei Cesarini, di cui sono ancora presenti alcuni resti (come le absidi ed un altare). Se osservate bene potrete notare degli affreschi di origine altomedievale che rappresentano dei santi e nella cappella minore degli affreschi di finto marmo di un secolo più tardi.
