Inviting setting - a real sun trap on a winter’s morning. We just wanted coffees and they initially seemed a bit hesitant as we wanted to be outside but all ok. We had 2 coffees (one of which was lukewarm) and a water. Bill came to 18 Euro. We were fine about this: it included the cover charge which we had anticipated as we were not eating and wanted to enjoy the sun. When we paid the bill we were then put under some pressure (by someone in authority with the card machine) to also leave a tip. I know what the cover charge is for in Italy and I have no problem in also leaving tips where appropriate. What I didn’t need was the lecture. The guy could see he’d upset me and walked off. The whole thing was embarrassing and I felt I was being fleeced in a tourist trap and left. This is the only time during our 6 days in Rome where anything like this happened. We just put it down as just a one off...

As we were eating our delicious plates of authentic Italian pasta (they were sooooo good!) and nibbling on green olive and cheese appetizers, and sitting outside on the street side under our umbrella at night, having a wonderful conversation with one of the owners (he was an incredible host!!!) about Italy and the city and his family and the history of his restaurant, we (my wife and I) said to each other: “This is that authentic Italian dining experience we have dreamed of having.”
The food was incredible, the atmosphere was lovely, and the people were outstanding and so kind and welcoming. We are so excited to go back and also to tell all our friends about this place!
