The synagogue in Trieste is a very impressive building that was built over a century ago. Its interior and exterior are reminiscent of Catholic churches, but all the elements and decorations are completely Jewish. Visiting the synagogue is only possible through organized visits that must be booked in advance and are given at very specific times. The guidance is given in Italian and English but not in Hebrew. In the museum, there is a small souvenir shop. All the people associated with the synagogue were very kind and nice and the feeling was completely homely. The cost of the...

Today we wanted to visit the Synagogue in Trieste and were greeted by a very unfriendly lady, who was workink in the adjoining "store". I wanted to ask a few questions, but the lady only pointed out very rudely that at the main entrance, which we only discovered later, it was written that the synagogue was closed. A friendly greeting would have been appreciated, as we were just tourists visiting the famous sights in Triest. People who work with people should...

One of the largest synagogues in Europe, it was designed to cater for a growing community of over 6000 at the turn of the 20th century; a community which was tragically decimated during the Second World War. With its space, Greek cross floor plan and rose window, it has the air of a catholic Church. There are very interesting bilingual guided tours in Italian/English 1-2 times a day from Sunday to Thursday.

The synagogue has very specific visiting hours, and you really have to be on time. The building itself is beautiful and fascinating, both from a religious standpoint and from a historical perspective. The guide we had gave explanations mostly in Italian, but she translated to English, and she answered questions. She was pleasant and very well informed. Definitely worth a visit.
